IT'S BOOK TALK WEEK
Creating a Trauma-Sensitive Learning Environment
A Reflection:
Over a 1/3 have experienced at least one or more ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences). Examples of ACEs are divorce, domestic violence, death, physical abuse, sexual abuse, incarceration of a family member, bullying and homelessness/doubling up. Please note that it's the child's response and interpretation of the event that creates the harmful impact that matters most, not the event itself. Now knowing the prevalence of trauma in an average classroom, take a moment to think about your Advisory class. Now take another moment and think about the students in each content period. How much do you know about your students in regards to trauma?Tuesday:
The purpose of the book talk is to develop the "lifestyle" of a trauma free environment for students. It is not situational, but rather something that should be practiced each day for all students. It is our responsibility as educators and professionals to provide a safe and predictable setting for children to learn, thrive and just be. Often times we have students who prefer to be at school, opposed to home, so we know we are on the right track! I'm looking forward to a deeper dive into our awareness and what this actually looks like.
