Dr. Russell's May 18th Update to the Community

Students Revitalize South Garden Beds

Throughout the spring, South's Wellness teacher Mrs. Mastin has been facilitating the revitalization of the raised garden beds at South elementary - last week, our 5th grade students collaborated to prepare the beds for the 5th grade Chorus Concert, which was held outdoors in South's back courtyard. Thanks to Mrs. Mastin and our students for leading this effort, which we hope is the beginning of an effort to convert this space into an outdoor classroom in the future!

Volunteer Clearances Reminder

Just a reminder to anyone serving as a field trip volunteer in the weeks ahead to please check that you have the required documentation on file with up-to-date clearances. You can review volunteer requirements below:

PVSD Volunteer Procedures/Information

Please contact Kim Jones in the main office if you have any questions about your clearances (; 610-489-2991)

IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING FUN FAIR VOLUNTEERS - if you are scheduled to support as either a Fun Fair or Chill Zone volunteer on June 3rd, clearances are NOT required.

21-22 Yearbook Committee Update

Did you forget to order a yearbook for your child or recently decide to purchase one and missed the deadline? Great news! A limited number of additional 2021-2022 yearbooks were ordered! Send cash or check (payable to South Home & School) to your child's teacher in a clearly marked envelope that shows "Yearbook" on the front. Only soft cover yearbooks will be offered for $21 each. Please don't delay, since when they are gone, they are gone! If you are unsure whether you bought a yearbook, please send us an email so we can confirm.

The secret yearbook vault was recently discovered, and a limited number of prior yearbooks are available to purchase at a deep discount! Yearbooks from last year, 2020-2021 are offered at $10 each, and yearbooks from 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 are available at $5 each. Since there are extremely limited quantities, please sent cash or check (instructions above) to your child's teacher ASAP.

You may also contact to reserve your copy of any of the yearbooks prior to your payment being received. Please be aware that due to the limited number of prior year yearbooks on hand, we cannot guarantee that there will be enough if there is a lot of interest.

You may also contact the committee if you are interested in assisting with the yearbook next year. It's as quick and simple as taking pictures of your child and their classmates at school events or during recess.

22-23 Class Placement Information

In the final weeks of the school year, South will begin the scheduling process for the 22-23 school year. We consider class placement to be one of our most important tasks, and for that reason I would like to share the process with you. Student placement is determined and reviewed by a core team of educators at South; each child’s academic, social and emotional growth, peer relations, and overall needs are carefully considered and discussed. We strive to create classrooms that are heterogeneous, function as cohesive groups, and provide each child with a teacher whose style will best meet his or her needs. We feel our time is well spent exploring all of these factors because we also share a personal responsibility for each child.

If you have any information you wish to share regarding your child that will be helpful in class placement, please send me a direct email ( by Friday, June 3rd, 2022.

While we will carefully consider the type of teacher and qualities of an educator you think will best serve your child, I respectfully ask that you refrain from making specific teacher requests. Thank you for your support in this process. More information will be forthcoming prior to the close of the school year. THANK YOU AGAIN!

Form to Report a Positive COVID Case and Symptom Monitoring Update

We have been experiencing high call volumes and increased activity in the nursing suite. To assist us in collecting data, we are asking families to report their child's confirmed positive COVID case using this form, Report a Positive COVID Case. Please refrain from calling the nursing office if possible. If you are seeking medical advice, we ask that you contact your child's medical provider with questions about their health, including guidance if your child is experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.

As a reminder, if your child is not feeling well or showing signs of possible COVID exposure, please keep them home until they are symptom free. *Please note that if your child misses a day or two of school for a non-COVID related reason, teachers will provide make-up work when your child returns to school; if your child quarantines for an extended period of time due to COVID-19, we will continue to provide work while your child misses school.

Thank you, in advance, for your support and understanding.
