Career Development: Career Resources and Naviance Family Connection
Throughout high school, students are involved both formally and informally in the process of assessing their talents, interests, and abilities in relation to their career development. This process includes, but is not limited to, taking self-assessments, finding success (or failure) in classes they take, being involved in extracurricular activities, and being exposed to different ideas and experiences. The Naviance's career tab has a variety of resources geared toward career or cluster exploration. Below are a few of the many resources available to assist students with their career development.

The College Search Process
Students can use Naviance to streamline the college search process and conduct an in-depth search for schools by location, size, academic programs, cost and more.
Apprenticeships are appealing alternatives to four-year college programs that provide students the opportunity to earn and income while learning valuable skills. This fair is open to the public!
Making the Most of the Summer Months:
Obtain a Part-time Job or Internship:
Skills students can gain in a job or internship are the same skills that colleges and future employees are looking for, including: responsibility, independence, problem solving, communication, working as part of a team, customer service, attention to details, and more. Working at a part-time job or internship is a great way to explore possible career fields too. Be sure to check out our job board in the counseling office for local job postings!
Volunteer:
Serving others can be tremendously rewarding and often provides an opportunity to gain experience students can use in the future. Volunteering for a cause that is near-and-dear to their heart or volunteering in an area that allows them to explore an interest is recommended.
Enroll in a College/University Summer Program:
Many colleges and universities offer summer programs for high school students. These programs can be academic in nature, focus on developing leadership skills, aim to introduce students to a particular career field, or provide exposure to college life in general. Some programs are competitive, and have late winter/early spring deadlines, therefore, it is important to plan ahead. Naviance's database of national enrichment programs can be a great resource for researching summer opportunities (Naviance's college's tab).
Research and Visit Colleges and Universities:
Summer is a great time to research colleges, as the school-year can be extremely busy with coursework and extracurriculars. Exploring websites like Naviance Family Connection and going on official college visits can really help students identify and narrow down their college list.
Job Shadow and/or Conduct Informal Interviews:
One of the best ways to learn about different careers is to talk to the people who are currently working in the career field. Students can do this by interviewing professionals or by job shadowing for a day to see first-hand what it is like to do that job. One of the best places to start with setting up informational interviews is connecting with family, neighbors, or family friends who may be doing work that is personally interesting. However, students also can contact businesses and organizations directly.
Take Summer School Courses:
Summer school opportunities are available for students who wish to catch up academically, improve upon their previous academic performance, or make room in their schedule for additional coursework. Students should talk with their school counselor about their interests and options regarding summer school.
