FLY IN, CRUISE IN, February 4, 2017 at the Naples Airport
Message from Jeff and Yolanda
Industry certifications earned through secondary and postsecondary career and technical education programs and courses are an important component of Florida's public education system. The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) considers critical enough that they persuaded legislators several years ago to provide incentives to high schools as well as the technical colleges to encourage students to take exams leading to industry certifications. The incentive for the technical colleges is approximately $800 to $1,000 for each industry certification earned in a target occupational areas such as aircraft/airplant mechanics, surgical technology, airconditioning, welding, nursing assisting dental assisting, auto service technician, computer systems, network support, drafting, and pharmacy technician. Last year, LWTC received a check for $84,635 for the industry certifications earned by students.
For LWTHS and other secondary schools, industry certifications are a component of College and Career Acceleration and it counts as 100 our of the 1000 points (10%) for our school grade. Any student who earns an industry certification, takes and passes an AP Exam, AICE exam or passes an academic dual enrollment course through FSW/FGCU earns an acceleration point. Each year the state calculates our points based off of the percentage of seniors that graduated but it is always a year behind. So, our students who will graduate in May of 2017 won't count until 2018-19 school grade. The goal is to have an opportunity for students to earn industry certifications at each grade level. Last year we earned 70 points for College and Career Acceleration (2014-15 graduates) which was highest in the district. The average for all high schools in this category was 54%. This year we are currently at 89% and we plan on finishing off our last 16 seniors who do not have an industry certification!!
This year the state will continue to give funding for industry certifications in the targeted fields; therefore it is critical that LWTC instructors continue to report industry certifications to Amanda Vazquez. This past week, a quick review of the data was conducted and we discovered that certifications earned in the Fall had not been sent to Amanda. LWTC instructors please review the industry certifications Excel spreadsheet sent to you last week and notify Amanda of any discrepancies.

Rose Whippo – Her Calculations for a Lifetime of Wellness
Campus Connections profiles math teacher Rose Whippo, who won a trophy at the 2016 CCPS 5K, on how she figures fitness into her life.
CC: How long have you been working out?
RW: On and off my whole life. There have been times when I get away from exercising for a few weeks, and as a result I start to feel sluggish and tired. Also when I don’t exercise I gain weight. I enjoy jogging the most, and find if I can force myself to just get started again, I can get back into a regular routine.
CC: What are your fitness goals?
RW: To stay healthy and to maintain my weight. I am proud to say I am not on any medications and hope to stay that way.
CC: How long have you competed?
RW: I have done sprint triathlons in the past (1/4 mile swim, 10-12 mile bike and 5k race) and many small races. I find having a scheduled competition is a great motivator to exercise.
CC: What advice do you have for anyone having difficulty getting into a fitness routine?
RW: Pick something you like to do and just get started. Make a weekly schedule and stick with it. If you fail, don’t give up, just try again. It helps if you keep a log and track your progress. If you can find a work-out partner, that is even better. Working out with another person holds you accountable. At a minimum tell someone (friend, spouse) your goals and ask them to help you stay accountable.
CC: Any other wellness words of wisdom?
RW: Eating the right foods is very important. When I need to lose a few pounds, I keep it simple by tracking my carbs and calorie intake daily. Keep a food journal. I eat lean meats (mainly chicken and turkey) and fresh vegetables. Read labels!
