Magic is Weird
Titania's Mix Tape
Theme: Magic Causes Confusion
Track One: Immortals by Fall Out Boy
At the beginning of "A Midsummer Night Dream" Titania is denying her husband, Oberon, and keeping an Indian boy. She would listen to this right before denying her husband so she could have the strength to do anything. This further deepens the theme by showing how magical relationships are confusing, not just magic itself. At this time, woman weren't even considered citizens and it must have taken a lot of guts to stand up to Oberon, the king of the fairies. I think this song would have really helped her in knowing she could do anything.
Track Two: The Planets, Op. 32 by Gustav Holst
Track Three: Is There Anybody Out There by Pink Floyd
I think this song is directed towards Titania while she sleeps, especially after the flower's juices are dropped in her eyes. She is looking for someone out there, someone the flower's magic would make her love. This song is very weird and confusing, just as the character would feel at this moment. As I said, magic causes confusion, and this song really embodies that confused state.
Track Four: Is This Love by Bob Marley and the Wailers
This song is completely directed towards Bottom, after she sees him. She's saying she will love him wholeheartedly every day and every night for the rest of her life. This causes an insane amount of confusion because Titania doesn't actually love Bottom. She essentially just said I will love you forever while her real self never loved him at all. That is very confusing.
Track Five: Love Of My Life by Queen
This song is about losing the love of her life and I think Titania would listen to this song while contemplating what would happen if Bottom said no to her love. At this moment she would do anything just for Bottom's love, just because her love is fake. She couldn't imagine life without him and is scared he won't know how much he means to her, just like the quote. She is scared and confused that she would lose Bottom, and this all came from some magic.
Track Six: Don't stop Me Now by Queen
I think Titania would listen to this song before going to bed that night. She would feel like her day had been the best ever and she wanted the rest of her life to be just like that with Bottom. The problem is she doesn't really love Bottom. The magic caused that. In the end, Bottom must be so confused that the person who gave all her being to hime the day before just left. His heart may be broken.
Track Seven: Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen
This is the song Oberon would play to her while lifting the spell instead of singing the song he did in the book. It would plant the seeds of a false world in her mind and make her believe what just happened was a dream. This song confuses her because what she experienced in really life, her brain now thinks is a dream. Imagine waking up one morning and believing you never did anything the past day, and today is yesterday. It would be incredibly confusing.
Track Eight Suddenly Seymour by Rick Moranis
This song Titania would listen to while looking back at the moment she saw Oberon beside her when she woke from the spell. It was a relief to wake from a magic induced fantasy where she loved Bottom, and the first person she saw was Oberon. She immediately thought that Oberon helped her through a rough night and was amazing. She then really appreciated Oberon. This is very confusing because she didn't love Oberon before this "dream" and now she does. She is confused by this and asks for an explanation.
Track Nine: Won't Get Fooled Again by The Who
I believe Titania would listen to this song while hearing Oberon tell the story of what happened. She feels outraged that she was fooled into giving Oberon the boy and this song helps her feel that anger. She is so confused because her brain says it was all a dream but she believes Oberon's side of the story. She doesn't know who is right and her mind is at war with itself.
Track Ten: Good Company by Queen
This is the song Titania would listen to while contemplating this entire experience. She realizes that all that happened was in the past and she just has to stay with the people she likes. Titania would still listen to this song today so that she can control her anger against some of her accomplices and she always can think of them as good company. By now she is trying to get over her confusion of the past day, and this is her way of staying sane. And to think all this confusion came from a single flower.
