September 2022 Roundup
New Library Classroom
September brings the addition of a library classroom at both Lowell West and the Lowell at Phillips. The Lowell West space is open to grades three to five for library class each week. Students are not able to checkout books at this time but they are available for reading in the library during class time.
Lowell School at Phillips resides in a temporary space in room 104. Students learn library basics and have a small collection to browse during their free time.

Book Care for All
We may not have access to our large library collection, but kindergarten to second grade still learn about library basics such as book care. With books in classrooms, the public library, and at home, these skills are useful to keep our books safe and healthy. We discuss handling books properly, keeping them safe from water and other potential hazards, and leaving books in a place where they get put away properly for others to locate with ease. We even saw books from Lowell that were not treated well.
Read Aloud Favorite: Creepy Crayon
Lots of titles make terrific read-alouds but few make the cut and appeal to kids from kindergarten through fifth grade. The Creepy Tales Series, from author Aaron Reynold and illustrated by Peter Brown, more than appeals producing full belly laughs and incredulous stares as Jasper Rabbit negotiates a series of sinister situations with various creepy objects. The third installment is Creepy Crayon. Drawing inspiration from the Twilight Zone, Peter Brown illustrates the tale of a purple crayon that at first seems just what Jasper needed until it's not and it won't leave. Check out this title from your local public library along with other books by Aaron Reynolds and Peter Brown.
Please Return ANY Lowell Library Books You Find at Home!
- My child has a library book from before quarantine. What should I do with it? Please bring it back! There is no penalty for pre-quarantine books and I would love to have them back in the library so other kids can enjoy them.
- Will kids check out books this year? No, our library is still in storage and the number of books is limited. Kids will have a chance to enjoy books during library class this year which will, hopefully, inspire some ideas for outside reading.
- Where can we access the databases and encyclopedias? Use the Lowell Library website and under SEARCH find a list of the databases students have access to through the school.
- What will students learn without the library? Don't worry! I selected a lot of books to continue our read alouds each week. We will also take this time to explore more aspects of our digital learning curriculum such as digital citizenship and computers as tools.
