The Lumberjack Edge
Cedar Mill Elementary School
March 2, 2018
Dear Cedar Mill Community,
Parent-Teacher Conferences are next week and we want to remind you there is no school on March 8th and 9th for students. If you have not had a chance to schedule a time with your child(ren)'s teacher(s), please access the schedules through this link.
Attending Parent Teacher Conferences is an important part of letting your child know education is important to you. Below are a few things you can do to help create an even more beneficial conference.
- Talk with your child before conferences about any concerns or questions. Ask what he/she would like you to talk about and what he/she thinks the teacher will say.
- Think about questions you would like to ask and jot them down. Some suggestions might be grade level curriculum, homework expectations, work habits, social skills, attendance, and home support.
- Share items you want the teacher to know about you child such as outside interests, special needs, or other information helpful in supporting your child's success.
- Keep and open mind – remember both you and the teacher want your child to succeed.
- After the conference talk with your child about what was discussed. Emphasize the positive and discuss a plan to make needed changes.
- Maintain an open line of communication between you and the teacher after conferences. The home-school communication is essential in setting up your child for success.
We look forward to seeing you next week during this very important time of the year.
Sincerely,
Amy Chamberlain
Principal

Register for Kindergarten Now
Kindergarten registration for Fall 2018 is now open to Beaverton resident students. Students must be five years of age on or before September 1st, per State Statute, and live within the attendance boundary of our school. We invite you to register early as this assists us in confirming enrollment for staffing purposes. Please present a birth certificate or passport that the office may copy for your child's enrollment file. Beaverton School District provides full-day kindergarten in all elementary schools. Feel free to share this information with your neighbors who have their first child starting kindergarten next fall.
Please plan to join us on March 15 from 6:00-7:00pm if you have a child entering kindergarten at Cedar Mill this fall. Parents will receive an overview of the program while the incoming Kindergarteners enjoy an activity with our Kindergarten team.
Please contact the school office at 503-356-2050 for registration information. You can also register your child online here.
Science and Engineering Fair is Coming!
All Cedar Mill students are invited to participate in the Cedar Mill Science and Engineering Fair, either individually or in groups, to answer a scientific question (inquiry) or solve a problem (engineering). The Fair is a celebration of science, sponsored by the Cedar Mill PTC! A project reviewer will talk with each student, and each student will receive a T-shirt to wear to the fair as well as a certificate. All students and families are welcome at the event, whether or not they completed a project. Science is fun for everyone!
Entry forms are due to teachers by Thursday, March 15. This is coming up soon! The science and engineering fair packet should have gone home with students by now. It includes all the information needed to help students complete their project including planning pages, sample boards, and the entry form. A PDF of the packet is attached at the bottom of this newsletter.
The science and engineering fair is on Thursday, April 12 from 6-7:30 pm, with set-up on Wednesday, April 11 between 5:30-7:30 pm. In addition to the students presenting projects, we will have science-related activities and a scavenger hunt.
Please contact the Science Fair chairs with questions: sciencefair@cedarmillptc.org
Pennies for Patients
Dear Cedar Mill Families,
The 5th grade leadership team and I would like to thank you for your generosity and thoughtfulness. The overwhelming support that you showed the Pennies for Patients (Leukemia & Lymphoma Society) fundraiser was amazing. You are truly a wonderful community! Currently, $675 paper money was donated and the coins are being counted at Key Bank. I will let you know that exact donation total once everything is counted. Thanks again for your support!
Sincerely,
Chris Marino
Safe Routes to School
Are you interested in the health and safety of your students? We are and want to meet others who are interested in drafting a Safe Routes to School Action Plan. This plan will prioritize projects (like sidewalks and crossings) and programs (like pedestrian safety education and campaigns). Several other schools throughout the district have Action Plans and some schools have used these action plans successfully and increased walking and biking while decreasing drive alone trips to school.
We are looking for a small group of people who can meet 3 or 4 times over the next few months. Please contact Jenn Alger at jennalger@gmail.com, if you’d like more information on how to get involved in planning safer routes to school for Cedar Mill students.
Lost and Found
The Lost & Found area in the lobby is overflowing with jackets, sweatshirts, water bottles, and more. Please take a moment to check for missing items. During parent-teacher conferences, the items will be on a table outside the gym. Anything remaining after parent-teacher conferences will be bagged and donated to the Beaverton School District Clothes Closet.
OBOB Thanks
We had a wonderful year of Oregon Battle of the Books! Our final battle would not have been possible without the support of so many staff, parent volunteers, and community volunteers. Thank you! We had 23 teams battling this Monday and after a nail-biting final, the 4 Musketeers emerged the winners! Congratulations to Paley A., Cari C.,, Victoria L., and Logan M.! They will be representing Cedar Mill Elementary at our Regional Battle!
Special thanks to Mary Newton, Janell Hosch, and Marla Meriwether, and Susan Salmonsen for their work in organizing this wonderful event for Cedar Mill students.

School Board Passes Resolution to Authorize Local Option Levy Renewal
The Beaverton School Board on Monday, Jan. 22, 2018 unanimously adopted a resolution to place a 5-year Local Option Levy Renewal on the May 15, 2018 ballot. This is a vote-by-mail election.
If approved, the Local Option Levy Renewal would allow Beaverton schools to preserve 300 teaching positions, maintain class sizes, and help ensure students are prepared for post-high school success. The levy renewal costs $1.25 per $1,000 assessed property value. Homes with the median assessed value of $238,000 would continue to pay less than $25 per month. The levy could raise approximately $31-$35 million a year.
In 2013, voters approved a five-year local option levy to restore teaching positions that had been cut due to repeated state funding shortfalls. The levy has raised $128 million, and 100% has remained in Beaverton schools to fund approximately 300 teaching positions and reduce class sizes. In the 2017-2018 school year, 158 of these positions were allocated to Beaverton's elementary schools, 53 to middle schools, 70 to high schools, and 18 to options schools. (Six teachers at Cedar Mill are funded through the current Local Option Levy.)
