Response to Intervention Letter
Dear Parent/Guardian,
The Portsmouth School District believes in providing the highest quality of education for our students. This letter is to provide you with information about our district-wide efforts to improve student achievement. To meet our goal, we utilize a problem solving approach nationally known as Response to Intervention (RtI).
All students participate in the core curriculum, with three levels (tiers) of interventions for students who demonstrate at-risk skills in general education or behavior. Each tier provides additional support in addition to the core curriculum.
As part of district-wide efforts to improve student achievement, all Portsmouth students are given brief assessments three times per year (fall, winter, spring), in order to measure their progress in the curriculum over time. Students who do not meet the expected range for his/her grade level for the Benchmark assessments are provided extra support.
Tier I – Teachers use different strategies within the core curriculum to address all students’ educational needs.
Tier II – Based on assessment and progress data, students who are unsuccessful in Tier I will be provided supplemental research-based interventions in a small group matched to their needs. Parents are notified and provided progress updates in Tier II.
Tier III – Students who continue to struggle in Tier II will receive more intensive interventions in Tier III. This support will be provided from our intervention team. Parents will be notified with student progress.
Portsmouth School District recognizes that all students learn differently, and we are committed to helping all students succeed. Therefore, we ask for your support in implementing this three-tiered approach to meet the academic and behavioral needs of each child in our school. If your child is in need of Tier II or Tier III interventions throughout the year, you will be notified.
Our school is excited to support all learners and improve educational outcomes for all students. As always, do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns.
Respectfully,
Lisa Little
Hathaway Principal

Reminders
HPTA News
Welcome to a new school year and a new HPTA board. The HPTA is looking forward to a fun year ahead. We hope to bring back some past events, as well as some new events, as safely as possible. You will find a lot of links and information here, so we’d recommend saving this for future reference.
HPTA Meetings
We will be back to our monthly in-person HPTA meetings and cannot wait to see and meet all the new faces in the Hathaway community and welcome back existing families. Our first meeting will be held in the Cafeteria at Hathaway on Wednesday, September 15th at 6:30pm. Dr. Kenworthy will be our guest speaker. Check out the agenda and please join us!
Volunteering Opportunities
Thank you to everyone who has signed up to be on the committees for various upcoming events and programs. We are so grateful for you and know that we could not do it without your support. We still need more volunteers, so please check out the different committees. We are most in need of volunteers for our two big fundraisers (Fun Walk & Springabaloo) and the Spring Book Fair.
We will be holding our 2nd Annual Fun Walk Fundraiser this year and we need volunteers to help make it a success. Please check out the Fun Walk sign up. It takes a village and, with a lot of people doing small tasks, we know this event can be successful for our school.
Room parents
A Room Parent is a liaison between the teacher and the parents of students in a particular classroom. Each teacher’s classroom will have two Room Parents. Room Parents are a great asset to the teachers and their fellow parents. They help to organize and coordinate donations and parental help for any classroom activities a teacher may plan. This includes holiday celebrations, chaperones for field trips, and organizing the class springabaloo project and basket. Parents interested in becoming a Room Parent for their child’s classroom MUST complete the Room Parent Sign Up by Friday, September 24th AND complete a background check to become VIS approved by Friday, October 1st. Email questions to VIS & Room Parent Coordinators, Chase Stalls and Jill May, at hathawayvis@gmail.com.
Additional Ways to Support Hathaway
Here are some easy ways to help fundraise throughout the year.

HPTA Board
From Dr. Kenworthy
Dear Members of the PSD Community,
We hope that everyone has had a great opening to the 2021-22 school year. All of us in the PSD are so happy to be able to see our building filled with students once again!
This fall, Portsmouth residents will be asked to vote on an important ballot question that would provide financing for a series of health and safety improvements in all four of our school facilities.
The referendum on Tuesday, November 2, will ask voters to consider approving a $21.44 million bond to finance the facilities projects. If residents approve the financing, Portsmouth has a time-limited opportunity to receive 40% reimbursement from the State – about $8.6 million to offset the costs.
You will receive more information about this important issue in the coming weeks. Please visit this link on our PSD website for more information about the projects and upcoming bond vote.
In order to share additional information with families and staff, myself and other representatives of the PSD will be available at all upcoming Open Houses and Parent Teacher Group meetings as well as other community events. We welcome your questions and comments about the proposed projects.
