Falcon Family Weekly Newsletter
October 1, 2023
Dear Lakelands Park Middle School Families:
This is a 5-day week. Please support our school and PTSA throughout the week by visiting our Scholastic Book Fair and signing up to volunteer. Check out the flyers below.
On Tuesday, October 3rd, please support our fall sports teams! Boys softball will play at home versus Kingview Middle School at 3:30 PM, and there will be a Cross County Meet away at Kingsview Middle School at 3:30 PM.
On Wednesday, October 4th, participate in Walk & Roll to School Day. Active trips to school enable children to incorporate the regular physical activity they need each day while also forming healthy habits that can last a lifetime. Furthermore, when families decide to lace up their sneakers or strap on their helmets to get to school instead of riding in a car, they help reduce the amount of air pollutants emitted by automobiles. Join us as we walk and roll to school! See flyer below.
Lastly, on Thursday, October 5th, we will host our Club Fair and Engagement Expo from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. Lakelands students who attend with a parent or guardian can earn SSL hours. See flyers below. You can also expect Marking Period 1 Interim Reports to become available on ParentVue and StudentVue on Thursday.
Principal Intern Practicum Has Begun
This is Dr. Vega, principal intern, and I will be our principal until late January. During this time, Ms. Alvarez will be moving into the role of 7th-grade administrator. Please contact me, Dr. Vega, for any matters that you would discuss with the principal, and contact Ms. Alvarez, for 7th grade administrator matters. She will return to the principal role on January 29th. Until then, I look forward to serving as your principal. Please let us know if you have any questions.
The PTSA needs your help. Volunteers and Donations Needed:
- The Scholastic Book Fair begins October 3. This is an important fundraiser for our PTSA and a fun event for our kids. We need our parents, guardian & caretakers help to make it a success. Please sign up to volunteer here.
- We also would like your help with donations and parent, guardian & caretaker volunteers for our Halloween Dance on October 27. Please sign up here to volunteer or donate.
Transition to Remind and Test Messages:
We are now using a different platform called Remind to send our automated messages. Remind is a more powerful system that allows you to receive emails and texts in your preferred language. Remind will replace our current system called Blackboard Connect. Remind is automatically synced with your Synergy ParentVue account to pull your preferred contacts. There is no requirement to use the Remind app, but you may do so if you wish. Learn more about Remind below.
Blueprint for Maryland's Future
The Maryland General Assembly passed the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future (Blueprint) legislation in 2021. The legislation is designed to transform public education in the state into a world-class education system by increasing educational funding, enriching student experiences and accelerating student outcomes, as well as improving the quality of education for all children in Maryland. One component of this legislation relates to providing individualized career advising services to middle and high school students. With this in mind, I am excited to share that Montgomery County Public Schools will collaborate with WorkSource Montgomery (WSM) and Montgomery College (MC) to develop and implement an exciting new Montgomery County Career Advising Program (MoCoCAP) beginning this school year. Read more on the initiative here and below.
Please keep reading to learn more about upcoming events and important information from LPMS, our PTSA, and MCPS.
Sincerely,
Dr. Sofía Vega-Ormeño (she/her/ella)
Principal

MoCoCAP will assist us in transforming the way we support career success for our students. The vision for MoCoCAP is to provide career advising services that will enable students to vividly describe their own strengths, interests, and workplace values; identify how they are expanding their skills and knowledge; describe the various opportunities ahead of them; and describe their goals for their future as they develop lifelong career management skills. During the 2023-2024 school year, MoCoCAP will support students in Grades 6 and 9, and expand the rollout of MoCoCAP to all secondary students by the 2025-2026 school year.
Full implementation of this innovative and transformative work will take time to plan, deploy, study, and perfect. Input and feedback on this work will be critical in the coming months and years. To learn more about MoCoCAP and our partners in this work, visit the MoCoCAP website.
If you have questions about this new initiative, please use the link to visit their website. This will support the development of an FAQ that will be posted to the MoCoCAP website to ensure all stakeholders are informed about this work as we continue to plan and implement.
After School Activities Have Started
- Activity descriptions, meeting times, and club sponsor
- Activity bus calendar
- Activity bus routes.
Extracurricular activities are held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. All children staying after school must report to the Cafeteria immediately after class dismissal at 3 PM. Ms. Rao and Ms. Brewster will supervise students in the cafeteria, and the cafeteria will provide an after-school snack. Students will remain in the cafeteria until their club or intramural sponsors pick up their students at 3:15 PM. Students will be dismissed from their extracurricular activities at 4:25 PM. If you are picking up your student, please be ready at LPMS no later than 4:25 PM; otherwise, your student can take the activity bus home. You can email Ms. Rao or Mrs. Gelfand if you have any questions.
Want to learn more about our after-school activities and other ways to engage? Please mark your Calendars for our Club Fair and Engagement Expo this Thursday, October 5th, from 6:00 to 7:30 PM.
Remind Transition
We are excited to share that LPMS and MCPS is transitioning to the use of Remind to engage with its school communities! If you're not already familiar with Remind, it's a communication tool that makes it easy to stay involved with your child's learning. Remind is free to use, and you'll be able to get and send messages on any device - even a simple text message from your mobile phone!
MCPS has created accounts for all teachers, staff, parents/guardians, and students ages 13 and above. On October 1st, LPMS transitioned fully to Remind. This is the first week you'll receive email or text messages to your mobile phone from Remind. If you do not receive texts, phone calls, or emails from Remind, please complete your annual verification or update your settings in Synergy ParentVue. Please note that downloading the Remind App is not necessary to receive messages, but it is an option some users prefer.
You will receive messages in your preferred language as indicated in Synergy ParentVue. You can also confidentially select a preferred language in the Remind App that will not be uploaded to your account and will not be reflected in your child's record. When we utilize two-way communication through Remind, you can also send messages back in your preferred language, and they’ll automatically be translated into the staff member’s preferred language.
We encourage you to watch the Getting Started with Remind Video and review our Parent Remind Quick Guide to get more specific tips on how to use Remind.
We're excited to begin using Remind to make connecting with your family more easy and engaging!
Register and Verify Your ParentVue Information
The Annual Verification process allows families to update contact information, collect important information about you and your student, including any medical, immunization, language preferences, and emergency information that school staff need to know. MCPS uses ParentVUE to collect this information electronically. Online registration is available now until October 20th.
We have online registration quick guides in several languages available to support you in this process.

COVID-19 Outbreak Measures and Vaccine News
Temporary outbreak precautions for individual classrooms where COVID-19 is spreading rapidly helps prevent spread to vulnerable individuals and to the rest of school. Check out the FAQ page for more information about how outbreaks are managed. The newly approved COVID-19 updated vaccine will be available in our area in the next few weeks. For information about COVID-19, influenza and RSV vaccine availability, refer to Vaccines.Gov.
PATHWAY TO COLLEGE, CAREER, AND COMMUNITY READINESS
MCPS created a new guide to help families, students and teachers work together to ensure student success.
The Pathway to College, Career and Community Readiness helps identify students’ strengths and areas of improvement to ensure each student receives the support they need.
Here’s how it works:
- The milestones described below will be used to address any learning gaps before students transition to a new grade level, college or the workforce.
- Parents will receive information about whether their child is meeting or not meeting these specific benchmarks.
- School staff, students and families will meet together to decide the best way to help the student succeed.
- In addition to academic benchmarks, schools will also provide opportunities for students to cultivate core competencies and skills to prepare them for life after high school. You can see the core competencies here.
Learn more about about the Pathway on the MCPS website. Resource available in multiple languages.

Earn SSL Hours and Fulfill Graduation Requirement
From MCPS:
All Montgomery County Public Schools students must earn 75 Student Service Learning (SSL) hours to graduate from high school. Middle school and high school students should continue earning SSL hours towards this state graduation requirement by engaging in SSL opportunities during the 2023-2024 school year, including traditional in-person opportunities and select virtual/remote opportunities that follow the SSL guidelines posted on the MCPS SSL webpage.
A note from Ms. A about SSL at LPMS:
Our goal is for all students at Lakelands to earn 75 SSL hours by the first Friday in April of their 8th grade year. Students who do so will earn the Superintendent's Student Service Learning Award for middle school. All Lakelands students earn 10 hours of SSL each school year through their coursework. Additionally, students can earn SSL hours by participating in PTSA meetings with their parent or guardian. Some of our after-school clubs also offer SSL hours. Every year we provide many optional SSL activities to the students by sharing them in this newsletter or by engaging all students in these activities during the school day. Finally, please encourage your child(ren) to participate in MCPS activities such as the Girls' Summit (see above) where they can earn SSL hours.
Our next optional SSL opportunity is to attend and complete an activity at the Club Fair and Engagement Expo on October 5th at 6:00pm at LPMS. See flyer above for more info.
Visit the Lakelands Park Middle School SSL page here: https://www2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/lakelandsparkms/students/ssl/
Meals and Free and Reduced Meals Application
Students who choose to eat the school breakfast and/or lunch must purchase these items this year or receive them free by applying for FARMs. Students will use their student ID number to access their lunch account at mealtime. Breakfast is $1.30 and lunch is $2.80. There are also a la carte options for purchase. Menus are updated regularly at the MCPS Food and Nutrition Services website.
Students may qualify for free or reduced-price meals based on household size and income. They may also qualify if they are receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Temporary Cash Assistance (TCA), or Medicaid benefits. Families may apply for meal benefits by completing an Application for Free and Reduced-Price Meals for the current school year. Students who qualify for reduced-price meals will not be charged that cost - meaning that reduced-price students will eat for free. Families that qualify for Free and Reduced Meals (FARMs) are encouraged to apply now.
Click here to apply: https://www.myschoolapps.com/. Several family food programs are tied to FARMS status.
If you have questions, contact Sandy Corrales, Sandy_A_Corrales@mcpsmd.org.
