Counseling Connection with Mrs. Walsh
Dear Parents,
In Guidance class we will be studying mindfulness. Mindfulness is the basic ability to be fully present, aware of where one is and what one is doing. Students will learn how to focus on the “here and now” and know how to accept one’s feelings and thoughts. Research shows mindfulness to be physically and mentally beneficial in the following aspects: decreased anxiety, better sleep, improved health, improved focus and impulse control, increased compassion, stronger relationships, and higher life satisfaction. We will practice mindfulness through different activities. Please ask your students about the “glitter bottles," the “bell listening exercise," and the “squish and relax exercise." Students will learn which activity is best for them.
February 5th – 9th is National School Counseling Week. Thank you so much for allowing me to serve as your child’s school counselor. School counselors are put into schools to help students reach their full potential. Historically, school counselors served more as a teacher, providing education with vocational and career development. Today counselors focus on three domains: academic, personal-social, and career. We also collaborate with parents and teachers to better ensure student success. Counselors utilize community services to enhance the comprehensive counseling program. Services provided daily by counselors consist of guidance lessons, small groups, individual sessions, crisis interventions, collaboration, and student planning.
Quote of the month:
“Mindfulness is simply being aware of what is happening right now without wishing it were different; enjoying the pleasant without holding on when it changes (which it will); being with the unpleasant without fearing it will always be this way (which it won’t).” – James Baraz
