Wrangling All the Worm Info
Habitat
Earthworms live in a lot of places and are most often found in moist soil and moist leaf litter. Regions that have permafrost and are permanently iced along with deserts are not suitable habitats for earthworms to live in.
Lifestyle
Living up to six years in the wild, earthworms are herbivores having a diet consisting of roots, leaves, and soil. They are many things from a food source for birds and rats to being fishing bait to being considered as an agricultural pest to use in composting. They are able to eat up to 1/3 of it's body weight in one day. Worms are very important to soil health and the growth of plants by transporting nutrients and minerals. Worms do not have specific gender parts. They can have 2-20 babies, but the average is four.
Adaptations
The bristly hairs on the segments of the worms, help give grip to move through the soil. A stream-lined boy and circular muscles for the segments help to move and the moving to be easy. Aestivation occurs when the environments becomes too hot or cold by them being inactive in a coiled ball deep in the soil. They lower the metabolic rate to lower water loss until conditions go back to normal. Due to loss of sound and sight, they are sensitive to vibrations surfacing from vibrations on the ground. In the rain, earthworms have to adapt by moving to the surface, so they don't drown. Earthworms surface at night usually, getting the name Nightcrawler, because they are sensitive to light. Earthworms can be found moving to the surface to migrate or reproduce in the early morning when there is fresh dew because they lose moisture through their skin.
