AMERICAN EDUCATION WEEK HISTORY
The National Education Association was one of the creators and original sponsors of American Education Week.
Distressed that 25 percent of the country's World War I draftees were illiterate and 9 percent were physically unfit, representatives of the NEA and the American Legion met in 1919 to seek ways to generate public support for education.
The conventions of both organizations subsequently adopted resolutions of support for a national effort to raise public awareness of the importance of education. In 1921, the NEA Representative Assembly in Des Moines, Iowa, called for designation of one week each year to spotlight education. In its resolution, the NEA called for: “An educational week ... observed in all communities annually for the purpose of informing the public of the accomplishments and needs of the public schools and to secure the cooperation and support of the public in meeting those needs.”
We honor all of our amazing staff members who shape, protect and guide our students each and every day.
The first observance of American Education Week occurred December 4-10, 1921, with the NEA and American Legion as the cosponsors. A year later, the then U.S. Office of Education joined the effort as a cosponsor, and the PTA followed in 1938.

2. Click the links on the attached document to register to meet with all of the college admissions representatives that are visiting us next week.
Have questions? Please see your counselor or Ms. Applegate, our Career Coach.

Thanksgiving for Handley Families 2021
This is our last week for collecting food items for our Thanksgiving Baskets for over 80 Handley families! Please consider making a donation. We will be collecting items behind the school on Tuesday 11/16 from 8:30 AM - 10 AM, or they can be dropped in the main office for Ms. Darlington and Ms. White. Here is the link to sign up for donations.
Thank You, Bonnie Blue!
We would like to thank our local restaurant Bonnie Blue for donating such an amazing spread of delicious breakfast cuisine for our Veterans Day celebration. They definitely got that “Handley PRIDE”!
Schedule Change at the Innovation Center
The Innovation Center team has reviewed 1st quarter student grade data and reviewed the survey responses from our students. The students love the extended time in their CTE class, but would prefer to see their core teachers more often. Taking both data points into consideration we have designed a schedule that allows our students to see their core teacher and CTE teacher daily. This new schedule will allow us to keep the blending learning model at the Innovation Center.
Take a Break From Cooking to Support Handley!
You'll be in the kitchen enough during Thanksgiving week. Take a break on Monday, November 22nd, and grab dinner from Chipotle instead. Your purchase will help support the Handley PTO which, in turn, supports our great faculty, staff, and students. Just show this flyer (on your phone is fine) at the Pleasant Valley Road Chipotle between 4pm and 8pm and a portion of your purchase will be donated to Handley. Prefer to order online? Just enter the Promo Code 4Q376RA and schedule your pickup between 4pm and 8pm! Thank you so much for supporting the PTO!
Biliteracy Seal
Are you interested in earning the Virginia State Seal of Biliteracy? JHHS is offering students the chance to take the AVANT 4S test in Spanish, French, German, and other languages.
What is it? The Seal of Biliteracy is a special stamp/seal that gets added to your diploma and listed on your transcripts.
How does it help me? This seal shows colleges, the military, and jobs that you can communicate in two different languages. This is a valuable skill!
What is the test like? The test is 4 different parts: reading, writing, speaking and listening. It takes 2-3 hours to complete the whole test. You will need to speak into a microphone for the speaking part. You can see samples from the AVANT 4S test and try it out HERE.
How does it work? You will get four scores (one for each part). In order to earn the Seal of Biliteracy, you must score a 5 or higher (out of 9) in each section.
Who? Any student at Handley can take the test. If you have already taken an AP test in this language and earned a 3 or higher- Congrats! You already have the Biliteracy Seal!
When? You can pick either the morning or afternoon on Tuesday, December 14 (A Day). Another opportunity will be in the spring.
What you need to do! Fill out THIS FORM to get on the list! Must be completed by Tuesday, November 23rd.

Loaner Chromebooks
Loaner Chromebooks have moved to the library. Please see the following procedures for borrowing a Chromebook.
If you forget your Chromebook, you will need to pick up a loaner in the library BEFORE school starts or as soon as you arrive from the EGSIC in the afternoon.
You should NOT return the loaner at the end of each block, but instead keep it until 3:00 or until leaving for the EGSIC in the afternoon.
We do not have loaner CHARGERS. Please ask your teacher if they have a charger you may borrow while in their classroom. If not, you will need to come to the library to borrow a Chromebook.
Losing your loaner privileges:
You may not check out a loaner more than 9 times per quarter. You will need to get in the habit of bringing the chromebook that was issued to you.
If you fail to return the loaner to the library at the end of the day 3 times in one quarter, including leaving the device unattended or in a teacher’s classroom, you will not be allowed to borrow a Chromebook for the remainder of the quarter.
If you lose a loaner Chromebook or damage it in any way, you will be held financially responsible for replacement of the device, and you will not be allowed to borrow another Chromebook until this has been taken care of.
Handley Parking Permits
Students are permitted to park on school premises as a matter of privilege, not of right. If you are going to be driving to school for the 2021-2022 school year and parking in the Handley parking lot, you must obtain a parking permit. Below you will find instructions on how to register your car and obtain a parking permit.
Vehicle’s year, make, model, & color
License plate number, Driver’s license number, & owner of the car
Paying for and receiving your parking permit
See the school treasurer (main office) to pay the $25 parking fee.
Take the receipt to the main office administrative assistants, and they will assign you a parking space and give you a parking permit.
Last: Hang the parking permit from your rear view mirror
The parking permit must be visible.
The permit will have a number on it. That number is your assigned spot for the year.
You may only park in your assigned spot during school hours. If you fail to park in your spot or break any parking lot rules, you may lose your privilege to park in the lot and on school property.
