CMS EAGLE EXPRESS
AUGUST 23, 2020 VOLUME 13 ISSUE 1
A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Hello CMS Family,
As the summer ends and the new year approaches, we have been busy planning and preparing to make it a fantastic year for everyone while working hard to ensure our building is clean, safe, and ready for the return of students and staff. We have had a great start with our faculty and staff, and we eagerly anticipate the return of our Hybrid and FIVE students during their assigned LEAP Day and on September 8 for our FIVE and Cohort A students.
As is our tradition, the first few days of school have been designed to celebrate our successes, set expectations for the new year, learn the ins and outs of our new physical environment, and create a school community. Our objective is to develop relationships, set expectations, answer questions, learn the layout of the building, prepare for Distance and eLearning days, and encourage cooperation and team building. As always, we will strive to continue our academic success in an environment in which every person feels respected and valued while encouraging each one to achieve at the highest level. Our priority is for our students to be safe, happy, and learning every day at CMS!
Practical Information About the First Few Days of School
Students arriving between 8:00 am and 8:30 am should report directly to their first block class.
Students do not need to bring school supplies on the first day in middle school. Students should bring a fully charged chromebook, a writing utensil, a notebook or paper, their class schedule, and their student ID.
Students should bring a water bottle and wear their mask to school. Refill water stations are available to students throughout the school.
Students may be involved in some outdoor activities such as tours, recess, and PE on these days as well, so please wear clothing appropriate for both school and warmer weather.
My door is open to you throughout this school year, and I have awesome teams around me-- from administration - to counseling - to teachers - to student nutrition - to custodial - to support personnel - to parent groups and everything in between-- who stand ready to answer your questions and provide support as needed. Together, we work hard to make CMS “One Happy School” even during a pandemic!
On behalf of the best faculty and staff in the world, we look forward to seeing you all again and meeting those of you who are new to our school. Enjoy the final days of summer, and we will see you in a few short weeks! It’s going to be another great year!
We aRe Chapin! Respectful, Responsible, and Remarkable!

CHROMEBOOK AND ID DISTRIBUTION
Students who were enrolled in a District 5 school during the 2019-2020 school year should bring their fully charged chromebooks to school with them. Students new to District 5 schools will receive their chromebook during their assigned LEAP Day or during the first day of their Cohort. If your student is new to District 5, is not attending his/her assigned LEAP Day, and is in Cohort B or FIVE, please contact Lori Powers at lpowers@lexrich5.org to make arrangements to check out a chromebook and take a picture for your ID.
All students will receive an ID when they receive their chromebook or on their first day of their Cohort.
CLASS SCHEDULES
Our goal is to release student schedules the week of August 24. We are still busily working with student schedules due to enrollment in FIVE and the Hybrid model. We will make every attempt to get schedules out the week of the 24th, but if necessary, we may need to move this date to the week of August 31. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Please know, we too wish we could have had schedules in your hands much earlier as in previous years. Hang in there with us as we continue to work to make this year a great year for everyone.
SCHOOL HOURS
TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION
Car Riders should have their masks on when they exit their cars, maintain social distancing entering the school, and walk to their classroom. Staff will be present and will help guide students to their first block classes. Students who are eating breakfast at school may go straight to the cafeteria upon their arrival.
Dear Parents of Bus Riders:
In preparation for the new school year the Transportation Department is working with each school to identify students who have elected to ride the bus upon our return on September 8th. Parents who have requested bus transportation through the District Parent Re-entry Survey will be assigned to a bus based on Cohort assignments. Once buses are assigned, you will be notified by phone call or email regarding your student’s transportation information. Final arrangements are expected to be completed by August 26, 2020. Students’ assigned transportation after August 26th may not be allowed to ride the bus until after September 29th once seating capacity is determined and route changes are finalized.
Email is the preferred method of communication with our office. Please keep in mind that buses are monitored by the office during the morning and afternoon runs and it may be difficult to reach us by telephone during those hours. If you have questions, please contact the Dutch Fork Transportation office via email at chapintransportation@lexrich5.org .
In accordance with DHEC and Department of Education the following protocols will be in place:
· All buses will be fully sanitized twice a day.
· School buses are authorized to seat two students per seat. Whenever possible, students from the same household will be seated together.
· Masks are required for all students while on the school bus. In accordance with guidance from the CDC and state officials, face coverings must completely cover the nose and mouth. Individuals with medical conditions that prevent them from safely wearing a face covering may seek reasonable accommodations. A request for medical exception must include written documentation, signed by a medical doctor, physician’s assistant, or nurse practitioner, demonstrating that wearing a face mask poses a medical risk to a person’s physical well-being and is medically inadvisable. Disabilities and religious beliefs that prevent students from wearing face coverings may also be considered for exemptions, with written requests for reasonable accommodations. Requests must be submitted to your school administrator before September 8th, the start of school for students.
Parents please remind your students of the importance of maintaining social distancing guidelines which include bus stops locations.
