Share Station in the Cafeteria
This week we implemented a Share Station in our cafeteria. Students will be able to place unwanted food that has been purchased from our cafeteria (packaged and sealed items only) at the Share Station. Any items placed in the Share Station are available for other students to take if desired, free of charge.
Snow Day Usage From Dr. Flanagan
SNOW DAY USAGE UPDATE
I would like to take this opportunity to verify our current school calendar with respect to storm day usage. Though this may be premature given the long range forecast for next week, I believe it is important to clearly identify where we are so that we can all plan accordingly.
As you know, each year when the school calendar is developed, we build in an additional five days for the purpose of accounting for potential school cancellations. Currently, we have used nine cancellation days, pushing our last day of school out to Tuesday, June 26th.
No public school district can extend the school year into July, due to the inability to expend funds appropriated in one fiscal year into the next. Some districts currently have Friday, June 29th as their last school day, with no ability to cancel school for any reason, without a plan to make up days. These districts need to create a “safety net” in the event that they need to cancel at some point between now and the last day of school. As such, they are beginning discussions about eliminating Good Friday as a day off or about using one or two days of April Vacation to make up for already cancelled school days.
This is not the case for us. At this time, we do not need to consider the Good Friday / April Vacation option, unless we are forced to cancel school three more times in the next few weeks. Please know, should it become necessary to cancel school again we will continue to add days on to June 26th.
I appreciate that people are frustrated with the snow and that some may desire options on how to better handle storm days in the future. In an effort to better understand the problem, I looked at the trend of our last five years of school cancellations:
2014 – 4 Cancellations
2015 – 4 Cancellations
2016 – 3 Cancellations
2017 – 5 Cancellations
2018 – 9 Cancellations
Clearly, this year is an anomaly and not a trend. Moving forward, we will continue to develop our school calendar with five (5) snow / emergency days.
I hope this email helps clarify things. Thank you again for your patience and flexibility.
Thanks,
Dr. Flanagan

Signing Our Banner to Support Parkland and School Safety
My message this past Monday:
For students in school today, school safety has always been a part of their lives. Drills of all types have occurred in schools since you started. It is safer to be in school than it was 20 years ago and yet we don’t feel that it is. The shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida on February 14th reminded us that we have to always be aware of our surroundings; school, friends and our own safety. Several 8th grade students met with me when the talk of a national walkout was going to go on March 14th. As we discussed the issue, it became clear to all of us that we all agreed that students should not have to worry about their safety when coming to school and these students wanted to express the concern that adults need to do all they can to ensure this safety in all schools. Additionally, these students wanted to create a lasting memory of our support for the students and staff in Parkland. There is a banner in the cafeteria that is available for students to sign when they are called down between 10:00 a.m. and 10:17 a.m., the 17 minutes represent the 17 victims of the shooting. If you choose not to sign the banner, you may remain in class and continue doing what you were doing.
Upon completion of the banner, Tyngsborough Middle School will send the banner with our support to Parkland. Thank you.
