Holy Week – Family Devotional Time
Holy Week is the week from Palm Sunday to Easter. It includes Jesus making people leave the temple who were not treating it like God’s house. Also the Last Supper happened that week along with Jesus washing the disciples’ feet, praying in the Garden, getting arrested and going to the cross. But the week continues with Jesus rising from the dead on Easter. What an exciting week for Christians! God sent Jesus to teach people and to show people how to live. And that helps us know how to live, too!
This was Jesus’ week – when God’s plan was visible to the followers and bystanders. This is a great week to remember what Jesus did for us by reading what happened. Please read the Bible with your family each day this week and talk about what you read. There is a symbol suggested for each day to help remember this week. Here are some ideas of what to read:
Sunday, April 9: Read Luke 19:28-40. This was like a parade for Jesus. Have you been to a parade? Talk about why we celebrate Jesus.
Monday, April 10: Read Luke 19:45-46. Jesus saw that people were selling things in the temple, making more money than what the things were worth, meaning they were cheating people. Jesus told them to get out because it was God’s house, not a place to cheat people. Talk about when it is ok to get angry and talk about what we should do when we are angry.
Tuesday, April 11: Read Luke 21:1-4. Jesus noticed that a poor woman put only 2 coins in to the offering plate. He knew that she gave all she had. Talk about how important it is to give to honor God. What kinds of things can each of your family give – money, time, listening ears, etc. We can give at church to God, but we can also give at home to God. Make a plan to give something soon!
Wednesday, April 12: Read John 13:1-5. Jesus was God’s son but knew his job was to serve God by serving other people. So, he washed the disciples’ dirty feet. The people in Bible times only wore sandals so their feet were really dirty! Jesus was teaching them that when we serve God we do things for other people – even when they don’t ask. Talk about how your family can serve others for God.
Thursday, April 13: Read 1 Corinthians 11:23-25. Jesus had the first Communion with his disciples the night before he died. He wanted them to remember that he was always with them. Maundy Thursday service is tonight at 6:30 pm in the CLC where we will share communion together. This is a good way to remember this special week. Talk to your family about what communion means to you and how it can help us remember Jesus.
Friday, April 14: Read John 19:16-18. Today we think of the day that Jesus died. It was sad for the disciples and followers to watch Jesus die. It is sad for us when people die. Jesus died for us all. Jesus died for all the bad things people did in the past and even for the bad things that we do. God sent Jesus to show us how to love God all the time. Talk about ways you show God’s love and say a prayer together thanking God for sending Jesus to teach us how to live and how to love. Lenten Airlines begins at 4 p.m. for children. Good Friday Service is at 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary.
Saturday, April 15: Read Matthew 27:57-60. A man named Joseph knew they needed a place to bury Jesus so he gave them his tomb. Jesus’ body was put in the tomb and a great big stone was put in front to close the door. Think of how sad the disciples and followers must have been. They loved Jesus and missed him already. Take time to talk about people and pets you miss who have died. Pray together thanking God for those people and pets.
EASTER Sunday, April 16: Read John 20:1-18. This is a long passage but so much is happening as the followers and disciples realize that Jesus is alive. How excited they must have been! God didn’t let Jesus stay dead – Jesus rose from the dead. What a miracle! Jesus showed people then and people today that God is more powerful than anything, even death! Because Jesus did not die, we know that Jesus is with us now. Enjoy your Easter treats and talk about how you can remember this powerful story as you enjoy the day. I hope to see you at church – 8:00, 9:30 or 11:00! Happy Easter! Remember Jesus loves you!
