Notes from the Principal

Dear Parents & Guardians,

We have been busy with all the Harvest/Halloween happenings in the school this week and the academics! Don't forget we end Daylight Savings time on Saturday night when we turn the clocks back one hour.

Our PTO is hosting a presentation of Master Planning & Visioning by members of the school board and district administrators. The planning for a new middle and high school (MPV) is a really important for the South Burlington District. This is really important for you, our elementary parents. The high school project should you be ready for your children so join us to get informed and the real facts. We will have posters on display in our lobby all next week.

Our Harvest Lunch is officially set. Come and join us on Wednesday, November 13th for an awesome meal! For those concerned about scheduling their time away from work, your child's lunch will be fairly close to their daily lunchtime. We'll have more specific lunch times out by next Friday. I hope you can join us!

4th & 5th Grade Parents - SBAC test results are being mailed home on Monday. The students took the assessments last spring and they have just become available. Congratulations to all of our students who worked so hard. Parents - please feel free to contact us with any questions.

Finally, congratulations to our 3rd Grade Teacher, Mr. Alex Goff. He and his wife, Emma, welcomed Baby Otis into their family! Ms. Kelly Knoth will be teaching with us while Mr. Goff is away.

News from the PTO

International Night: International Night is next Thursday, November 7 and we hope to see you there. Come learn about cultures of the world and celebrate the diverse community that we enjoy here at Orchard School. Stop by the gym between 6:00 - 8:00 to look at country displays prepared by Orchard families. All are welcome!

Square One Art Project – order deadline is 11/12: Your student’s custom art catalog should have made its way home this week. Instructions for ordering keepsakes will be included with the catalog. The Order Deadline is 11/12 – all orders submitted before this date will receive free shipping to Orchard School. Orchard School receives a % of all Orchard student orders. Please direct questions to Lianne Cleary via Konstella.

Lake Monsters Orchard Night Volunteer/Organizer needed: The PTO is looking for a volunteer to take over organizing the Lake Monsters Orchard School Night at Centennial Field next summer. Tasks include communications with the Lake Monsters to plan the event, distributing and collecting ticket order forms and arranging for Champ to appear a Friday morning meeting. Please contact the PTO at for more information.

Box Tops for Education—New Format! As many of you are aware, Orchard School participates in Box Tops for Education. Many products from General Mills have special labels on them, and each one is worth $0.10 (See complete list of products here: Last year, our school earned $280 from this program. Hopefully this year we can increase that number! In their efforts to modernize the program, they have created an app to redeem the money for our school and will be phasing out the traditional Box Top clips. Instead of clipping the box tops and mailing them in, you can now download the app and simply scan your receipt. The app will automatically add earnings to our school account. *Please note: receipts must be scanned into the app within 14 days of purchase!* Traditional box tops that are on packages will continue to be accepted, so please keep cutting them out and putting them in the jar in the lobby! They will be collected periodically throughout the year

November 2019: The Trees That Made Vermonters

Hi everyone!

This month in Farm to School we are focusing on our senses and tasting our way back in time, to better understand the two foods that have shaped our culture and landscape here in Vermont. Sugar Maple trees have been here long before this place was ever called Vermont. This month we’re telling the story of the squirrel, who scratched their way into maple’s bark and licked the sweet sap that leaked out come spring. Then Abenaki people, indigenous to this area of Vermont, learned from the squirrel and collected sap by slicing open maple’s bark. European settlers were taught of maple’s gifts by the Abenaki, and the story has continued to change since then. European settlers happened to have brought a tasty companion to maple syrup: Apple trees. Newer to the landscape, but fitting quite nicely into the space that pasture farming left, orchards have shaped our fall traditions and our local doctor’s work load… :)

Our taste test uses UVM professor Amy Trubek’s research on Terroir: The Taste of Place to help us identify all the complex flavors present in different types of maple syrup.

For our apples, were tasting fresh Fortune apples from Larkin Orchards, donated generously to Farm to School for this lesson. We describe the tastes and mouthfeel: mushy, firm, juicy, sour… Then we co-create “An apple bite in slow motion” madlib story.

Finally, we taste warm, cinnamony applesauce… the perfect combination of the two! Here the recipe:


  • 4-6 Apples
  • ¾ cup Water
  • ¼ cup Maple Syrup
  • 2 tbsp Cinnamon

Cube apples. I leave the peels on, but you can remove them based on preference (skins do hold lots of the apple’s vitamins and some great fiber). Put apples and water into a pot. Set to boil. Add maple syrup and cinnamon. Mash with a potato masher or fork once apples are soft. Enjoy warm, or store in a jar in the refrigerator.

RAFFLE for a CAMEO appearance!

Disney's Beauty and the Beast the musical, at South Burlington High School, Nov. 22nd, 7pm, and Nov. 23rd, 2pm and 7pm.

One lucky elementary student will win a chance to join the cast in the Saturday matinee performance! No experience necessary. Costume fitting and entrance fee included. Winner will be choosen on November 15th.

Raffle tickets available at RMCS, Orchard, and Chamberlin Elementary School front desk, or through any BATB cast member. Checks are payable to South Burlington Drama department.
