The EdTech Connection
Making the connection between ed and tech: 15 July 2019
Encouraging Academic Honesty
As technology becomes more prevalent in the classroom, I hear a lot of questions concerning student cheating and attention.
But if they're on their phone, how do I know they're not cheating?
But if they take the test online, how can I be sure they're not just Googling the answer?
But if I ask them to use their device, won't they just play games instead?
My response is that how do you know they're not cheating if it's on paper? How do you know they're really paying attention even without having a device in their hand? When I was in high school, I was able to cheat on at least three tests that I distinctly remember: one in my gifted English class, one in Algebra 2, and one in Chemistry. What did these classes and teachers have in common?
They asked basic "recall" questions and didn't monitor students once they handed out the test. I'm not saying that me cheating was acceptable, but simply that they made it easy for me to do. Instead, we need to make it difficult for students to cheat!
These are old articles, but I thought I'd share them again as we get ready to head back to school. Take a look and let me know what you think!
