AB 104
There are some new grading guidelines that were issued by the governor called AB-104 in July due to COVID and recently there were newly adopted guidelines in September called SB-167. If you complete the steps, then your student can turn the letter grades of A-D into Pass. A pass on the transcript will earn 5 credits towards graduation but will not calculate in their GPA. If your student earned an F they can turn this into No Pass. A No Pass on the transcript will earn 0 credits towards graduation and will not be calculated in their GPA.
Please look at the district website for specific steps, Here . Once you download the Grade Change form you will need to upload a document into Parent Connect. Please see attached documents for directions on how to upload the requested paperwork. For any questions you can reach out to your students school counselor.

“Could a greater miracle take place than for us to look through each other’s eyes for an instant?”
Henry David Thoreau is perhaps best known for his “Civil Disobedience”, which was his transcendentalist argument against complying with an unjust government. What he is probably less known for, however, is the above quote about EMPATHY. Though written over 150 years ago, with all that is happening in our country, it seems this could have been written yesterday. In it, Thoreau compares an empathetic perspective to a miracle. And though it may have seemed miraculous 150 years ago, it may seem even more so today. But why does EMPATHY have to be such a miracle?
Throughout history, philosophers, writers, and thinkers have challenged the human race to “walk in another’s shoes'' and “don’t knock it ‘til you’ve tried it”--in other words to show EMPATHY to one another. After all, humankind is the only living creature capable of EMPATHY. You will never find a tiger trying to SEE the world through the eyes of the gazelle, let alone trying to actually understand the gazelle’s perspective. Though we might be very good at sympathy, do we truly work to be good at EMPATHY? Maybe this is the miracle--we often fail to act with an understanding of the difference between sympathy and EMPATHY. In short, sympathy is appreciating that someone is feeling a particular way. When we are sympathetic, we understand the state or condition of others, but that is where it ends.
EMPATHY, on the other hand, is truly striving to feel another person’s feelings in exactly the same way that he/she is feeling them. In order to be EMPATHETIC, we must let go of our own biases and attach our thoughts/feelings to other’s experiences. President Barack Obama said “Learning to stand in somebody else’s shoes, to see through their eyes, that’s how peace begins...Empathy is a quality of character that can change the world.” Though a great challenge, demonstrations of EMPATHY can immediately make the world a better place--thus making EMPATHY miraculous!
I wish you a week filled with EMPATHY!

Especially when things are feeling a bit tough, it can help to set some goals. Making goals achievable and ensuring that you have a few short term as well as longer term, more ambitious goals helps us feel we're making progress. It doesn't matter if your goal for the day is something really small, the important thing is to give yourself the opportunity to feel like you've achieved something and to celebrate that! This month's calendar is full of ideas to help you think about how you can put this into practice.
