Dear HMMS Families,
I hope this newsletter finds you all well. We made it to the LAST DAY OF SCHOOL!
Congratulations to all of our students, faculty and families, as we bring another school year to a close. To our families, navigating middle school is a true team effort and we value your partnership and participation. To our faculty, we are so thankful for your hard work and dedication to our students and the HMMS community. To our students, congratulations on all of your successes and accomplishments! You continue to meet the high expectations set for you as you grow academically, socially, and emotionally.

HMMS Community Mural: Where's Waldo?
Designed & Painted by the HMMS Art Club
Drawn by the students of HMMS
This year in art class, all students explored figure drawing, focusing on 3 areas: accurate proportions in gesture drawing, skin tone blending, & creativity in personal expression. They learned, too, that everyone’s skin is the same - just with different amounts of melanin & carotene which affect coloring. Next, students drew expressive figure self portraits. Many drew teachers too. The art club students developed the reading theme, using their 5 favorite books for each background. They then designed & painted each of the 5 murals to celebrate HMMS’ passion for reading!
The murals have been hanging in our main hallway for the past few weeks and students have had fun finding themselves, their teachers & their classmates! And of course, finding two Waldos and one Wanda among them!
It is amazing to see our many different interests and characteristics that make up our wonderful community!
Thank you all for sharing your creativity!
-Ms. Katz
Summer Reading and Math Information
We hope our students have plenty of time to unplug and relax this summer! It is well deserved after a successful school year. It is also important for students to continue to maintain routines and engage their brains! Please see the information below regarding summer reading and summer math work for our middle school students.
Summer Reading (Summer Reading Flyer is linked below)
Franklin Middle School students are required to read at least two books this summer.
Use this log to record the books you read and return to your ELA teacher in the fall.
Students will share at least one of their summer reading books in the fall.
This is a great way to connect with new teachers and peers.
We recommend that students take brief notes on their favorite title to keep their memory fresh.
Acclaimed author Jordan Sonnenblick is scheduled to visit us in October!
Students are encouraged to read or listen to one of his books this summer.
- Below is the Middle School Summer Reading Recommendation List to help with your book selections.
- HMMS will offer our Books To Go! table in the school lobby this summer. Be on the lookout for our flyer with dates and information!
Summer Math (Summer Math Letters are linked below)
- This summer Franklin Middle School students are expected to participate in a summer math review program. We are providing you with a few resources to explore some math over the next several weeks
- Students Entering Grade 6: On our website and in the letter below is the link to a math packet of problems that can be downloaded and printed.
- Students Entering Grades 7 and 8: Access to individual student DeltaMath accounts will be available throughout the summer. Students already joined the appropriate class at the end of the school year.
- Additionally, teachers have provided a list of online resources that students can reference for review. These resources include videos, model problems, interactive games, online events and additional worksheets.

Summer Meal Program
The Milford Summer Meal program is starting on Monday, June 26, 2023 through Friday, August 18, 2023 (closed Tuesday, July 4, 2023) at Memorial Elementary School (12 Walnut Street Milford, MA 01757).
The program is open 11:00 am – 12:30 pm. It provides free lunches for kids ages 1-18 and will also provide a meal to an accompanying guardian. There will be activities for the children and groceries on Fridays for the weekend and sign-ups for a new backpack for the new school year. (Please note that adults must be accompanied by a child between the ages of 1-18!)
The Franklin Food Pantry will be closed the week of July 4 but will be open for the rest of the summer.
Looking Ahead to Next Year...
Some information and reminders as you begin to plan and prepare this summer for the upcoming school year.
Supply Lists
Our teachers have put together some recommended supplies for each grade level. These are general supplies that students will need in the fall. Supply lists will be posted on our HMMS website. Click on the "Supply List" bulletin.
Lockers & Backpacks
All grade levels will return to using lockers for the 2023-2024 school year. Students will no longer be allowed to carry their backpacks during the school day. Students will store their supplies, backpacks, coats, lunches and other school materials in their lockers. Locker breaks will be set by each team at the start of the school year.
At HMMS given the size and number of lockers available in our hallways, students will share lockers with one "locker buddy". This locker buddy will be someone from their homeroom and will be assigned on the first day of school.
Team Placement and Homeroom Assignments
In mid-August, families and students will be notified when the Aspen portal has been turned back on and placement information can be found for the 2023-2024 school year. Students will use Aspen to access information regarding their team placement and homeroom assignment prior to the start of the school year. We will not be sending placement letters home. A scheduling update will be provided in my July newsletter with more information.
Student Medication
Medication order forms need to be completed by both the physician and parent for medications to be administered for the upcoming 2023-2024 school year. A school wide email will be sent by the nurse in June to review health requirements. Medication forms are included (as an attachment) for all students. Please arrange for your child’s physician to complete these forms during the summer. They must be dated on or after July 1, 2023. Medication orders need to be renewed every school year.
Franklin SEPAC: Caregiver Needs Assessment
A Message from Franklin SEPAC:
Parents/caregivers are important participants in the planning, development, and evaluation of a school district’s special education programs. Your feedback is valuable and will help us to shape the priorities of SEPAC to support students and families further.
Please complete the Franklin SEPAC: Parent/Caregiver Needs Assessment linked here.
This survey should take approximately 10 minutes to complete, and all responses are anonymous.
*Note: If you have multiple children, please fill out a separate survey regarding your experiences with EACH child.
