Body Safety Program
Dear Lantern Road Families,
During the 2017 legislative session, the General Assembly passed SEA 355 and SEA 447, which require the Department of Education to provide child abuse and child sexual abuse education in schools to kindergarten through grade 12. Families give consent/do not give consent for their child to participate in these presentations in Skyward ("Child Lures" back to school form). These presentations are provided at each of our HSE Schools by the Indiana Center for Prevention of Youth Abuse and Suicide.
You can learn more by watching this brief parent video: https://www.indianaprevention.org/child-lures-prevention
Questions about the school presentation? Please watch the brief parent video and/or reach out directly to Maggie Owens at maggie@indianaprevention.org
Lantern Road’s presentations will be on January 12th and 13th. The classroom presentation lasts approximately 30 minutes. This will be the tenth year that LRE has provided this presentation for our students.
Thank you,
Ellynn Stein

Restorative Practices
Hamilton Southeastern Schools is offering a one-day training, Fundamentals of Restorative Practices, for parents/guardians of HSE students and community members who are interested in learning more about restorative practices. Participants will be able to understand the foundation of restorative practices and recognize how these practices cultivate relationships, repair harm, and restore connections. This workshop is identical to the training that district personnel received and will be facilitated by our district restorative practices team.
This training is limited to 50 participants who must have an up-to-date Safe Visitor background check and complete the online application that can be found here. We hope to have a diverse group of participants with representation from many of our schools.
The training will be held on February 13, 2023 from 8:30am-4:30pm. Participants must be available to attend the full session to be considered.
There is no cost to participate if you have a current background check on file. The deadline to complete the application is noon on January 13, 2023.
To apply for consideration, click this LINK.

Notes From Nurse O
Dear LRE families,
If your student is ever absent due to illness and was evaluated by a physician, please remember to ask your physician for a school note. You may either send in a hard copy with your child or send it via email to ookuszki@hse.k12.in.us.
Thank you, Nurse O

Due to the short week, this week we reviewed the life rules that we practiced during the first semester. We will return to our life rules next week!
Holiday Light Recycling Program
This Holiday Season, HSE is asking you to give a gift to the Earth by making the choice to be more sustainable. HSE Schools will be hosting a district wide Holiday Light Recycling Program. Starting December 5st and going until January 13th each school will be collecting old, broken, tangled, or unwanted holiday lights. Technology Recyclers will take these unwanted/unusable lights and break them down into useable components that will be used to make new products.
- This will be the third year for the holiday light recycling program!
- During the 2020/2021 season you helped collected and recycle 3,519 pounds of holiday lights!
- During the 2021/2022 season you helped collect and recycle 4,711 pounds of holiday lights.
- In two years of recycling holiday lights, you have helped recycle the equivalent weight of a Ford F250.
- Your small choices have helped prevent a total of 8,230 pounds of plastic, metal, and glass from ending up in a landfill.
- You helped make a HUGE impact.
Why should you recycle unwanted or unusable Holiday lights? Because you care about the environment! If you want to keep your lights from going to a landfill and do your part to look after the Earth, recycling your lights is a great way to do it!
No matter what the reason, resist the urge to throw old holiday lights in the trash. Please participate in HSE district wide Holiday Light Recycling Program this year!
PLEASE DO NOT:
- Please do not include any packing material.
- Please do not include any apparatus used to wind up or store the lights.
- Please do not include lights wrapped in garland.
PLEASE DO:
- Please place your lights in the recycling box (many will be stored in the front office, media centers, or science classrooms).
- Ask your friends, neighbors, social groups, and family members if they also have lights that need to be recycled.
- Do your part to be more sustainable this year.

Going Places in Global Studies
Welcome back! In Global Studies we are learning about the Huichol Indian tribe of Mexico. When the Spanish Conquistadors came upon the Huichol in the Sierra Madre mountains, they recognized the tribe’s strong artistic culture. They are most famously known for their yarn paintings. In class, 1st and 2nd grade will be creating their own yarn paintings. The 3rd and 4th grades will be making Ojo de Dios (Eye of God) yarn weavings that the Huichol believed warded off evil spirits but today are a common craft even in the States. Kindergarten will be learning about Mexican Mosaic tiles and will be creating their own tile which will be displayed in the hallway.
Mrs. A-C is already planning for our next global adventure and is looking for the following items:
Chinese Checkers (x6)
Toilet and paper towel rolls

Volunteers Still Needed
Committee chairs and volunteers are still needed for the Science Fair and Pancake Breakfast on February 4th. If we don't have chairs and volunteers in place for these events, they run the risk of being cancelled. We run on volunteer power and depend on parents to help us with these events. A PTO exec team member will work alongside you to help things run smoothly, and we will give you all the information you need. If you are willing to help, please email lanternroadelementaryPTO@gmail.com.
Staff Appreciation
