Helen Keller International Provides Free Eye Exams and glasses at Hubbs
Helen Keller International’s Minnesota Vision Program provides vision care services that include vision screenings and eyeglasses as needed, to community members ages 7-adult, at no cost to them or their families.
The Minnesota Vision Program is a community vision care provision program. They bring a team directly to community locations to provide free vision screenings, a refraction assessment, and a free pair of eyeglasses to those community members who need them. For those community members who require a pair of eyeglasses, the Minnesota Vision Program will deliver the eyeglasses to the Hubbs Center for dispensing within 2-4 weeks after the initial assessment.
Across many populations in the United States, up to 20-25% of community members will need a pair of eyeglasses--significant considering the number of community members who will never receive eyeglasses. Helen Keller International can provide a cost-effective health intervention for community members and their families.
On the first day, 25 students were seen, and 22 needed glasses and have a new set of glasses on order to pick up in a few weeks. HKI will return to the Hubbs Center for more exams on July 20, however those appointments are full at this time.
Thank you to the Helen Keller Institute for this great opportunity for our students!
