Welcome to Centennial Middle School
May 17, 2021-Supporting our Incoming 7th Grade Students
Message from the Principal
We are very excited to welcome our 7th grade students next year. Our class of 2027 is going to be a very special class as they have experienced an unprecedented year of virtual school, hybrid school, social distancing and everything that comes with a global pandemic. At CMS we are looking forward to seeing everyone come together in fun, laughter, learning and community.
Since this school year has looked and felt different than any other school year, I hope that this newsletter provides answers to the many questions you might have and also most importantly supports our students in the transition from elementary to middle school. We will have videos, pictures or narratives of staff to introduce themselves and we will get to know some parts of our school to make it more familiar for everyone on their first day of school.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to let us know by calling our school directly or sending me an email included in this newsletter.
Kind Regards,
Johanna Castillo
CMS Principal

Forecasting for Middle School
For the past month your student has been forecasting for middle school with their 6th grade teachers. If you have questions about it please contact your student's current teacher or reach out to us at CMS. Please ask for Mr. Buck (Assistant Principal) to support with your questions or just email me and I will connect you with him.
Introducing REAP Staff
REAP is a year-round multicultural youth leadership program committed to empowering the next wave of leaders. Please help me welcome a new member of REAP, Jasmine Groves and Joel Shungu.
Jasmine Groves
Dear, 6th grade families my name is Jasmine Groves.
I started working with REAP March 1st of 2021. I work for the reflection program at CMS. The reflection program offers mindful moments and one on one check-ins for students that might just need that little reset or just a safe space to be able to talk things out. I am an Oregon Native. I love going to the beach and mountains. I love being able to get outside and really enjoy the beautiful nature in our backyard. I graduated from David Douglas High School and then went on to get my degree in early education from Warner pacific. I would say my teaching style would be very holistic, I believe in supporting the youth in school just as much as supporting them in their lives outside of school.
Joel Shungu
Hello everyone,
My name is Joel Shungu, I am a Youth Essential Coordinator at REAP which is a year-round multicultural youth leadership program committed to empowering the next wave of leaders. REAP works with students in grades 3rd through 12th, who represent our most marginalized student populations. We empower to become global leaders through civic engagement, entrepreneurship, and cooperative for a better future NOW. Reap holds 4 different programs which are solutions, renaissance, YEP, and reflections which is the program I currently serve in. The REAP Reflections program provides support for students identified as having disciplinary issues. All support is provided through a cooperative management and strengths-based lens. Elevate is the intervention program for Reflections. Elevate focus on keeping students caught up on work, supporting them in addressing their behavior issues, and promoting a student’s right to equal access of education. Essentially, we are here for you whether you have behavioral issues or not. We are here to be mentors, and help you progress towards any goals you have in life.
Lastly, I hope I will get to meet a lot of you very soon a Centennial Middle School.
