First of School Make-Up Days is Tuesday, October 23
The Florence 1 Schools Board of Trustees voted to approve make-up days for those missed during Hurricane Florence.
Florence 1 Schools will use three days, which were set aside on the 2018-19 calendar, as make-up days: Tuesday, October 23, 2018; Monday, February 18, 2019; and Monday, March 18, 2019.
The administration will determine when remaining missed days will be made up in anticipation of a possible waiver request, which may be granted later by the State Board of Education.
Students Recognized for Perfect Scores on PASS & SC Ready
At its October 18th meeting, the Florence 1 Board of Trustees recognized 29 students who earned perfect scores on standardized tests during the 2017-18 school year. Twenty one students earned the maximum score on a portion of the SC READY, and eight students earned a perfect score on a portion of the SC PASS.
SC READY is a statewide assessment that includes tests in English/Language Arts and Mathematics. It is administered to all students in 3rd through 8th grades in the spring. Nineteen students earned maximum scores on the mathematics section of the test; three of the students earned maximum scores on the English/Language Arts portion of the SC Ready.
SC PASS is a statewide assessment for students in 4th, 6th, and 8th grades in science, and 5th and 7th grades in social studies. Eight students received recognition for perfect PASS Scores.
Ian Townsend of Williams Middle School is recognized for perfect scores on both the SC/Ready (Mathematics and Language Arts) and the SC Pass Tests (Science).

Florence 1 Schools’ Parents as Teachers Program has earned a prestigious endorsement by the Parents as Teachers National Center as a Blue Ribbon Affiliate, making it one of the top performing home visiting affiliates with the international Parents as Teachers network.
“This award demonstrates to our community that Florence One Schools has a high-quality Parents as Teachers Program,” said Florence 1 Director of School Readiness, Floyd Creech. “Our parent educators are diligently working with preschool children in the community to ensure that they will be ready to enter school.”
Parents who have preschool children from birth to age four who are interested in becoming involved in the Parents as Teachers program are encouraged to call Melanie McMillan in the Florence 1 Schools Office of Parent Education Services at 843-758-6871.

Spanish Students Share Skills with Elementary Students
West Florence students in Griselda Milligan’s Spanish III Honors classes visited Delmae’s Spanish Language Immersion Program to work and help with language acquisition skills. The West Florence students shared Spanish books and Spanish activities that they created for the students. The Spanish Language Immersion students had the opportunity to hear stories read aloud in Spanish. They also worked in small groups with the West Florence students to learn number words, colors, letter sounds, and articles of clothing.

The Stronger than Stigma Comedy show, Nobody's Happy! Inspiring better days through comedy and creating awareness for mental health advocacy, is a family-friendly comedy show featuring Josh Novey, Brittany Brave and Gabriel Magid. The comedy show will be held on Friday, October 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Florence VFW Post. Strongerthanstigma.org is a non-profit organization, and proceeds from the event will go toward organizations that support mental health advocacy. For more information call 954-740-2027.

Free November SAT Registration Available to All Florence 1 Students
The College Board is offering a free November SAT registration and CSS Profile™ fee waiver to students in a FEMA-designated area. Florence County is a FEMA designated county.
Students should register for the November SAT (by October 24 online) and then call Customer Service at 866-756-7346 by October 24 to receive a refund.
• For the CSS Profile fee waiver, go to cssprofile.org and complete the application. The system automatically applies eligibility rules. Call CSS Profile Customer Service at 844-202-0524.
South Florence Orchestra Concert
The South Florence Orchestra will present the annual Halloween Concert on Thursday October 25, at 7:00 p.m. in the South Florence High School Auditorium. The event will include carnival games and prizes in the lobby prior to the concert and a costume parade during the concert. Musical selections to be rendered include themes from The Hunger Games, Beetlejuice, and Pirates of the Caribbean. Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend.
