Laker Anchor
February 6, 2023
Greetings, Laker Families-
January was a busy month for our Laker team! Thank you again for all your support of the American Heart Association by donating to the Kids Heart Challenge. The students learned so many great lessons with Mr. Holme in PE class about heart health and were able to participate in this worthwhile cause as an optional after school event. So much fun! Grade levels honored the work of Martin Luther King, Jr. with various age appropriate activities…such as classroom read alouds, book creations, viewing videos highlighting his “I Have a Dream” speech, class discussions tying into our monthly themes of perseverance and kindness, etc. Students also just completed our K-5 district winter math and reading benchmark testing, Highly Capable testing, etc. Each grade level has had a different assessment schedule and teachers will be communicating student results with our parents via email, 2nd trimester report cards, upcoming spring conferences in March, etc. Very soon our intermediate grades will begin preparing for the spring state math and reading SBA, and 5th grade will also be taking the state science assessment (WCAS). Please watch for more specific communication from the 3rd-5th grade teachers as we get into the spring. NOTE: As you schedule family vacations and appointments for your children, please keep in mind that students will need to be present during our SBA testing window which will be May 15 - June 2.
We kicked off February Black History Month with Bright Star Theatre performing African Folktales in two separate assemblies (K-2 and 3rd-5th) on the stage in our MPR. It was such a special moment for our school to celebrate and learn together. A HUGE thank you to our PTA for funding this very impactful assembly for Emerald Hills!
Important Safety Reminder
We have observed some vehicles not adhering to the crossing guard’s flag at the lower crosswalk at West Tapps by the lake. This is becoming increasingly unsafe so we are sending this reminder for drivers that drop off in the AM or pick up in the PM to please slow down, watch for the crossing guard, watch for students on bikes, and use extra caution when approaching the crosswalk. Thank you!
