Dumfries Dispatch

A Caring Learning Community Celebrating Diversity

A Message from Our Principal

Dear Dumfries families,

We hope you all are doing well and keeping safe at these uncertain times. Our Dumfries staff misses our students and the school community very much.

To help our students continue their learning, Prince William County Schools has created a Continuity of Learning Timeline for our students and staff. Here is a link to that timeline: https://www.pwcs.edu/cms/One.aspx?portalId=340225&pageId=42141665

We are in Phase 4 of our timeline, which is, Implement Increased Teacher Supported Home Learning. This newsletter will outline in detail how our Dumfries staff is dedicated to providing instructional support for our students and you.

Starting this week we are offering students an opportunity to continue their learning using Choice Boards. The Choice Board for your student can be found on your student's teacher's webpage. Read more below about Choice Boards.

Mrs. McFadden and I are hosting a Zoom Coffee Talk with the Principals on Thursday, April 16, 2020, at 10:00 am. We look forward to 'seeing' you virtually for our Coffee Talk.

We hope you all continue to be healthy and well.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Magrath

What is a Learning Choice Board?

All of our teachers and specialists are working hard to plan meaningful review and extension learning options in the form of a Learning Choice Board for our students. A Learning Choice Board offers students optional learning opportunities in language arts, math, science, social studies. Our Encore staff and Specialists will also provide links to suggested activities. Choice Boards allow students to work at their own pace and independent level while enjoying their learning.

All the activities are review or extension of content that has been taught this school year. There will be enough options for your child to do something in every subject area Monday through Friday. However, please do remember that this is a resource and is optional.

As this is an optional Choice Board, you can choose to do what suits the needs of your family. The Learning Choice Board will change and be updated every Sunday evening. "Drop Everything and Read" will remain the same because it is the most important learning opportunity for your child. During "Drop Everything and Read", please have your child read independently for at least 15-30 minutes.

The work from the Learning Choice Board will not be collect or graded. Teachers will offer feedback to students. Please feel free to share any pictures of your child enjoying their learning!

Classroom teachers have been reaching out to families. If you have not heard from your student's teacher, please reach out via email. Your child's teacher will have weekly virtual office hours for you to reach out to them for assistance.

Please visit https://dumfrieses.pwcs.edu/ and go to class pages to see each grade level's Learning Choice Board for this week.
