Marysville Message

Friday November 5th

Dear Marysville Families,

Happy Friday.

I know that during November it can feel like there is no school happening for the students. I realize that can be very difficult for families. We appreciate your understanding while as a staff community we work to prepare for parent teacher conferences, assess the student learning progress made during Quarter 1 instruction and plan for continued strong instruction for Quarter 2. As you can imagine, teaching is a little different during a pandemic and we are needing to make continuous adjustments to meet all of the individual student learning needs as best we can.

We promise to make good use of the extra planning time that has been provided.

Next week will again be a short week. There will be school for students on Monday 11/8, Tuesday 11/9 and Wednesday 11/10.

Thursday 11/11 is no school in observance of the Veterans Day holiday.

Friday 11/12 is the Board approved Teacher Professional Development Day - No School for students.

On Wednesday we will be having a virtual end of quarter assembly to celebrate all of the student hard work and success during the first part of this school year. We will share that video with families next week.

As always please reach out to us with questions or comments.

Southeast Guiding Coalition Information

Hopefully you have heard by now, but I want to bring it to everyone's attention that the district is planning for changes in the enrollment boundaries for 21 Southeast Portland Schools.

Nothing has been determined at this point, but there are currently proposals in the planning stage that would have students currently coming to Marysville as their neighborhood school possibly moving to Woodmere or Arleta schools in the future.

I know that any thought of change can be very upsetting and I want all families to have all of the information that is currently available. The district is continually posting updates to this planning process on the Enrollment and Balancing website (linked below).

Since so many schools are involved, there is a ton of information that can be difficult to decipher.

I will be available everyday next week after the morning drop off and student dismissal to meet under the covered area on the playground to answer any questions and share the proposed boundary maps with families.

Let me be clear that neither of the 2 current proposals are official. A third proposal for boundary change is being developed and there will be opportunities in upcoming weeks for family input in virtual district listening sessions.

Some change to Marysville boundaries will be happening, probably next year, so this is an issue that everyone should be aware of and tracking.

The district has a survey about these changes for the community. Here is a link

I encourage everyone to share their thoughts and concerns. It is important for the district to know how boundary changes would impact families.

The goals of the changes are to find a home for the K-5 students currently at Harrison Park school, and to balance the enrollment at all of the southeast elementary schools and middle schools. To do that there will need to be shifts in all neighborhood school boundaries.

Please join me for Q&A sessions next week (in person, outside 8:50- 9:15 AM and 3:10 - 3:40 PM) or email me with any questions.
