Superintendents Corner
The ultimate outcome of education for our students is readiness to pursue college and career upon completion of their diploma requirements. Being prepared is only half of the equation. Along with preparedness, students must be ready to take actionable steps toward achieving their post-secondary options. Whether it is enrollment in additional education, enlistment in one of the armed forces, or gainful employment, our students must have the tools necessary to take the next step.
So how is GJCS working to meet this goal for our graduating students? We are prioritizing our efforts to prepare individual students for the most appropriate college and career pathways through a shift in mindset that aids students in connecting interests, careers and educational pathways to achieve post-secondary success. Changes in Indiana graduation requirements, a focus on career awareness and exploration, personal interests, and the integration of employability skills have been the focus of administrators, guidance counselors and our career coach. Through the use of Naviance and targeted learning opportunities, our staff is intentionally fostering the development of a student’s understanding of self, interest, career and education as a means to an appropriate career and pathway. Many of these experiences reach into the elementary levels and span through grade 12.
In addition to readiness for post-secondary decisions, we have also identified 9 personal attributes that are habits of mind that can empower student success. These attributes include:
Preparedness – learning and applying both academic and content
Relating – developing empathy, compassion, and kindness
Initiative – taking action and leading
Communicating – listening and sharing information to exchange ideas effectively
Collaboration – working as a responsible member of a team
Designing – being able to problem-solve and think critically
Contributing – serving others
Balancing – being self-aware and socially-emotionally healthy
The attributes make up the Dubois County Graduate Profile https://www.hub19.org/graduateprofile and serve as soft-skills that are developed alongside academic achievement. Successful acquisition of these attributes is a recipe for success when applied to a student’s personal next steps beyond graduation.
It is our desire that upon receipt of a high school diploma, our students are ready, willing, able and excited about what the future holds!
