Art Activity Butterfly Paper Sculptures - 3rd-10th grades

Tuesday, Feb. 23rd, 12:30-1:30pm

8391 Airport Boulevard

Juneau, AK

Note: The kit we were originally planning to use for this activity was not available, so we have changed to this one instead. It looks like it will also be a lot of fun!

Artists and designers often look to nature for inspiration. French artist and naturalist E.A.Seguy drew intricate scientific illustrations of butterflies and created designs based on his drawings. Students learn about Seguy and produce a 3 dimensional paper sculpture butterfly with colored paper and oil pastel patterns.

Students will:

  1. recognize that artists turn to nature for ideas and inspiration and be able to give examples.
  2. differentiate between a scientific illustration made for reference and a design made for decoration.
  3. construct a paper sculpture butterfly demonstrating symmetry in pattern and shape.
  4. design a unique butterfly sculpture incorporating the structure of a real butterfly.

Please RSVP to juneau@yksd.com or through this flyer so that we know how many students to expect.

8391 Airport Boulevard

Juneau, AK

Students and Parents,

Please join our Occupations Webinar on Thursday February 25th from 10:00-11:00 AM to learn about how you can use AKCIS to research and explore occupations. This session will help you improve your answer to that tough frequently asked question, “What you want to be when you grow up?”. AKCIS can help you explore your career options and determine whether a particular occupation will be a good fit for you and the lifestyle that you want. This is the second session of a 4-part AKCIS webinar series.

You can attend the webinar in person at your nearest Raven Correspondence School location, or you can log in from any location with internet and phone connection. To log in separately, you must register here. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email with the link to the webinar and the phone number/access code you will need to join the webinar. Note – you will need to join the WebEx meeting online and by phone.

Before the webinar, please log into your AKCIS Portfolio at www.akcis.org and complete the five Assessments (Interest Profiler Short Form, Career Cluster Inventory, SKILLS Inventory, Work Importance Locator, and Reality Check), which can be located under the Assessments tab (see below).
