Principal's Message

Comet Nation,


I hope you and your family are enjoying the start of your summer break! On behalf of the faculty and staff of Marion L. Steele High School, we thank you for your continued support this past school year. Our students' successes are a direct result of our valued partnerships with our school, families, and the community.


This final newsletter of the 2021-2022 school year highlights our fourth grading period academic award winners, PBIS award winners, and provides important information for the upcoming 2022-2023 school year.


The Class of 2026 will be welcomed to Marion L. Steele High School at Freshman Orientation on August 19th from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm.


We hope to see you at Open House on August 22nd from 6:00 - 7:00 pm. All parents are encouraged to attend the parent meeting which will begin promptly at 6:00 pm in the Cafetorium.


Please note, students will be receiving their chromebooks on the first day of school. We will not have chromebook distribution prior to the start of the school year, as we have done in the past.


If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the high school main office from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm until Thursday, June 23rd. We will return from summer break on Monday, August 1st.

Welcome, Mrs. Abbott!

We are excited to welcome Denise Abbott as our new Grades 9 and 10 Assistant Principal for the 2022-2023 school year!


Mrs. Abbott's Bio:

After 10 years of classroom teaching, I am excited to join the fantastic staff of Marion L. Steele High School as Assistant Principal! I have spent the last eight years helping 8th graders prepare for high school and am looking forward to the transition to serving 9th and 10th grade students and supporting our staff. Prior to teaching, I spent 12 years working for Lorain County Community College in the Learning Resource Center. I love learning, teaching, and serving and can't wait to do all three in this role. Please let me know how I can support you!

Returning Student Registration

All emergency, medical, and contact information for all K-12 students will be collected through the Returning Student Registration process in your PowerSchool Parent Portal account at the start of each school year.


This information must be completed by parents/guardians in order for students to receive their school-issued Chromebook.


To complete the process, please go to your PowerSchool Parent Portal account, click on the Returning Student Registration link in the left menu, and follow the prompts. For step-by-step directions, please refer to this Online Returning Student Registration Directions document.

If you completed this process last year, most of your child's emergency and contact information will be pre-filled on this year's form. You will simply need to check, verify, and update any changes.


Thank you in advance for updating your returning student's information as soon as possible.

Parking Passes

All student drivers parking on Amherst Exempted Village School District property must obtain a parking permit and follow the student parking rules outlined on page 26 of the Marion L. Steele Student/Parent Handbook.


Parking Permits will be available to purchase on the following dates for certain groups of students. The online parking application will be available on the Steele website under the information tab on Monday, August 15th.


August 15th: Seniors Only


August 16th: Seniors & Juniors Only


August 17th and beyond: Open to any student driver

Meningitis Vaccine Requirement for 12th Grade Entry

The Ohio Health Department, under Ohio Revised Code 3701.13 and 3313.671, requires all students entering the 12th grade to provide written proof that they have received a dose of the Meningococcal (meningitis) vaccine after age 16.


Please ensure the school has proof of your child’s vaccine on file by September 14th. Students without proof of the meningitis vaccine may be subject to exclusion from school

MLS COUNSELING DEPARTMENT

Welcome, Mrs. Diaz!

We are excited to welcome Christine Diaz as our new school counselor for grades 9-11, Last Names A-K, for the 2022-2023 school year.


Mrs. Diaz's Bio:

I am honored and excited to be joining the Marion L. Steele High School counseling team. I am looking forward to working with all students, families, and the Amherst community on social, emotional, and academic success. Over the past 20 years I have raised 3 children, been a school volunteer, and a K-12 substitute teacher. Before joining Amherst, I worked as a school counselor in an alternative school setting with high risk youth, grades 2-12. I have obtained certificates in Anxiety and Stress Management; and Trauma and Crisis Management. Please feel free to reach out with any questions.

Student Schedules

Student schedules for the 2022-2023 school year will be available to view beginning on August 15th, in PowerSchool Parent Portal.


To view your schedule, log into your ParentPortal account via the website (schedules are not available to view in the ParentPortal app) and click on “Next Year Schedule”. Please note a student’s schedule will only be changed to correct an incomplete schedule or to meet graduation requirements. If you have any questions about your schedule, please contact your school counselor.

Late Arrival/Early Release

Late Arrival or Early Release is a special privilege for juniors and seniors with at least five credits for the year and who have an opening in their schedule.


Eligible students must submit a Late Arrival/Early Release Application. This application will be posted to the Steele Webpage on Monday, August 15th. Once approved, the student's schedule will be changed. Students must have Late Arrival/Early Release on their schedule before starting. There will be no Late Arrival on the first day of school.

COMET ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT

If you are participating in a sport or activity during the 2022-2023 school year, please review the following information.


  • Complete Final Forms. Go to https://amherststeelecomets.com. Under the tab that says “More”, click on “Final Forms.” For families new to Final Forms, parents register first. Your child will be invited to Final Forms through the parent's registration. If you already have a Final Forms account, please complete the signatures for the 2022-2023 School Year.


  • Pay to Participate (PTP) activities have a fee of $300. Each athletic season has a PTP due date. This fee can be paid at the Steele Main Office. Please see Mrs. Doehr, Athletic/Financial Secretary.


  • Get a current physical exam. Please turn your completed physical form into Mrs. Doehr or Mr. Wolf.

Academic Eligibility:

All student athletes (Fall/Winter/Spring), please check your schedule to verify you are in the equivalent of at least 5 one credit courses. Please note, PE courses do NOT count towards your academic eligibility because they are only worth the equivalent of a half credit. If you need to add courses, please contact your school counselor. If you are unsure or you want help verifying your eligibility, please contact Mr. Wolf.

Freshman Orientation is for students only. Parents are encouraged to attend the Parent Information Meeting during Open House on Monday, August 22nd, at 6:00pm in the Cafetorium.


Students should be dropped off at the cafetorium courtyard which is located across from the baseball field.
