Principal's Report

Kia Ora e te Whānau and welcome to Week 6 of the term.

Sadly, this week we farewelled two of our valued staff members.

Mrs Brittany Morrison finished this week in preparation for welcoming a new baby into her family in the next couple of weeks. Mrs Morrison has worked across the school as our release teacher. We are really going to miss the enthusiasm and fun she brings to all our classrooms and look forward to welcoming her back to BPS once her children are a little older. We also look forward to meeting the newest little Morrison in a few weeks.

Mrs Makerita Laban also finishes this week, as she is relocating with her family to Invercargill. Mrs Laban has provided bi-lingual support for our school for almost 3 years and has been invaluable in supporting a number of students and families. We wish her and her family all the best as they embark on an exciting new chapter in their lives.

Ngā mihi nui,

Vicki Neave

Room 3

Room 3 students have had a busy week! We were lucky enough to visit Dave and his helpers from the University of Otago who showed us some amazing science, looking at acidity. We even had a chance to play with some dry ice! On Friday we made some beautiful art to support daffodil day. The children all did an amazing job! We were also involved in the Future Focus Learning (FFL) with other schools around South Otago and learnt how to make a story with sound and movement using our own art on Scratch Jr.

Ngā mihi nui,

Trudy Hayes and Jenny Harris.

Congratulations to...

Congratulations to Joss Winslade who recently gained an Honours in her NZ Modern School of Music Grade 2 Theory exam.

Room 1

Room 1 students have been enjoying the sunshine this week and getting outside for some games. We have been focussing on taking turns and working together.

Mask Wearing at Balclutha Primary School

The Board of Trustees has reviewed our COVID protocols and has decided that from the beginning of next week we will begin to relax our mask expectations in line with the reduced number of cases in our school community.

From Monday 5 September:

  • mask wearing wil be optional for staff and students in the classroom
  • all students (year 4 and above), staff and visitors will continue to wear masks in assembly and other large school indoor gatherings.
  • adult visitors to our classrooms will continue to wear masks inside, and staff will wear masks when meeting with our visitors.

Thank you for your ongoing support as we work to minimize the impact of COVID in our school community.

Room 2

Room 2 students have been using materials and movement in Maths recently to help us with our addition and subtraction. Our pictures this week show Aubree and Zack making maths stories using toy frogs on a lilypad and Nathanael enjoying an activity where he has to jump on the sum of two numbers. We also had a great time joining with our friends in Room 1 for a fun outside game.

Room 4

Room 4 students have been using cars to help us to learn to read. We sound out the letters we see on the car track. We then zoom the cars across to read the word.

Thank you

Balclutha Primary School would like to say a huge thank you to Matau Garden Centre for kindly donating a trailer of compost for our vegetable gardens. Yesterday Scott Martin, our Enviroschools facilitator and Tyson worked up a sweat emptying the trailer. Thanks Scott and Tyson!

Next week the garden club will start planting some vegetables.

Room 12

Room 12 students have been working on google drawing. We picked an image from google and traced over the image, next we printed them out, picked a background colour and stuck them on. We had so much fun! Meg Smith.
