CHARACTER TRAIT OF THE MONTH: PERSEVERANCE
Notes From the Counseling Corner with Ms. Courtney
What is Perseverance?
Perseverance is when you push yourself to work through challenges.
Students might be surprised to hear that perseverance (also called grit) is really important for living a life they enjoy and can be proud of. Life is full of challenges and struggles. Perseverance is the drive that helps you get past the hard stuff to get to what you want.
Perseverance is very important for students to develop because life is full of challenges, and perseverance helps you get through the difficulties to get to what you want. Sometimes it’s a challenge for your mind, like learning a new math equation or staying focused on something you need to do when you really want to be doing something else. Sometimes challenges are emotional, like when you’re sad after a pet dies or when a friendship is breaking.
No matter what the challenge, perseverance is crucial because it is the drive that helps you get through the obstacle to the easier bit on the other side. Even though it feels so hard when working through a challenge, perseverance keeps pushing you through to your goal and to the good feeling that comes with knowing you did your best.
Ways to foster Perseverance:
1. Praise Effort Over Being ‘Smart’ - One important thing to keep in mind when trying to teach students perseverance is the importance of praising their effort rather than the result. When you praise the effort that students put into a task, they’re more likely to continue persevering and trying hard.
2. Model Being Perseverant - Next, you want to be a good role model for your student and model being persistent when you are faced with a challenge. Be sure to point out the challenge you are facing and use self-talk to show how you continue trying even though it isn’t easy.
3. Challenge Your Student - Find an age-appropriate challenge to present to our students each day so they get used to facing difficulties and learning how to solve them.
4. Give your student responsibilities - Giving your students responsibilities is a great way to teach them the value of persistence. Start with something simple.
5. Resist the urge to rescue your child - At some point, your student needs to learn independence and perseverance. Try observing your student and see what they will do when faced with challenges. Students learn a lot through trial and error. When your student learns from failure, they become happier and more confident when they succeed.
6. Celebrate Successes - Finally, don’t forget to celebrate your students’ successes. Point out how their effort into learning helped them accomplish a task or achieve a goal.
Jones Spring Fling
Our FTO would like to remind all families that the Jones Spring Fling will take place on campus Friday, May 12th from 5-8pm!
Our Jones teachers are hosting fun carnival booths; please volunteer to help your classroom teacher with their booth!
Sign up for your students' individual classroom volunteer slots here in the List of All Booths. Sign up below to volunteer as a general event helper here: (we need families to lend 10x10 pop-up tents, help set up, and help sell game tokens!)
Buncombe County Special Olympics
We are Proud of Our Students!
Special Olympics aims to offer continuous sports training and athletics competitions in various Olympics-style events for individuals of all ages with intellectual disabilities. This provides them with the chance to develop physical fitness, demonstrate bravery, experience happiness, and partake in sharing their talents, abilities, and companionship with other Special Olympic athletes, their families, and the community.
We are extremely proud of our students who took part in this year's Special Olympics. They represented themselves, their families, and our school with great distinction.
