Where Has This Year Gone?!
I was told today that there are only 17 instructional days left in the year! While the time may drag for the students, I always feel that this season speeds by! The computer lab and library are booked solid most days between now and finals. I love to see the library utilized before, during, and after school! As this academic year comes to a close, I can't help but think about how grateful I am for the opportunity to work with these incredible students every day.
Summer Flip-Flop Book Exchange
The Library Squad is sponsoring a summer reading book exchange the week before finals. Students will be invited to bring in their old titles and swap them out for some new ones to have for their summer reading adventures. This will be a great way to save money while expanding your list of books read. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
Harry Potter Interactive Movie Night
On Friday, May 4th, the library will be hosting its first ever Harry Potter interactive movie night with the screening of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone! All students will receive gift bags filled with snacks and props which will be used throughout the movie. Students will be sorted into houses, select their "wands", and experience the movie in a completely different way!
Gateway Winner for 2017-2018
Final prizes are being sent out this week for the nearly 50 students who participated in this year's Gateway Reading Challenge. High school students across the state voted and Everything, Everything came out in the top spot followed by All the Bright Places in 2nd and Six of Crows in 3rd. All interested students are invited to be a part of the Gateway Reader Selector panel beginning in August for the 2018-2019 nominees!
If You Haven't Read This Book Yet, Put It At The Top Of Your List!
I read MANY books throughout the year. While some are classics I like to revisit, most are titles I have had recommended to me by others or from reading/award lists, blogs, or literary reviews. This past year, the buzz in the library world has surrounded the book The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. I finally got around to reading this novel and was not disappointed. The book addresses the Black Lives Matter movement from various perspectives. It is powerful, relevant, and an incredibly well-written novel. The book left me feeling incredibly uncomfortable--a sign of good literature, in my opinion. ''With smooth but powerful prose delivered in Starr's natural, emphatic voice, finely nuanced characters, and intricate and realistic relationship dynamics, this novel will have readers rooting for Starr and opening their hearts to her friends and family. This story is necessary. This story is important.'' -- (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))
