Forest Grove Gazette
January 2020
Message From the Principal
With the New Year, we are always reminded of our goals, and one of the most important goals at Forest Grove this year is maintaining a high level of parent engagement.
The month of January brings with it several opportunities for parent engagement at our school.
First, we would like all of our parents to take our Forest Grove Site Goals Survey. Here are links to an English and Spanish version of the survey.
Forest Grove Goals Survey 19-20
Encuesta De Metas De Forest Grove 19-20
We have designed this survey to take 10 minutes or less, so please take a few moments to share your thoughts. Your input on this survey is vital to our efforts to judge our effectiveness in serving our families and identifying where we need to improve.
Finally, for the first time, Forest Grove will host a Coffee with the Principal on Wednesday, January 22nd at 8:45 a.m. Forest Grove Counselor Zoe Roach and I will provide families with strategies and tools to identify and successfully deal with the effects of bullying at the elementary school level.
We will speak about programs our school has in place to prevent bullying, how to recognize bullying, and how our school responds when a bullying situation occurs.
We will also leave time field any questions parents may have.
Our families are important to us, and we hope that these parent education opportunities are useful as you continue on the wondrous journey of raising a family.
Thank you,
Buck Roggeman, Principal

Drive Safely Around School Zones
School days bring congestion: School buses are picking up their passengers, kids on bikes are hurrying to get to school before the bell rings, harried parents are trying to drop their kids off before work. It's never more important for drivers to slow down and pay attention than when kids are present – especially before and after school.
A few precautions go a long way toward keeping children safe:
- Don't block the crosswalk when stopped at a red light or waiting to make a turn, forcing pedestrians to go around you; this could put them in the path of moving traffic
- In a school zone when flashers are blinking, stop and yield to pedestrians crossing the crosswalk or intersection
- Always stop for a school patrol officer or crossing guard holding up a stop sign
- Take extra care to look out for children in school zones, near playgrounds and parks, and in all residential areas
- Don't honk or rev your engine to scare a pedestrian, even if you have the right of way
- Never pass a vehicle stopped for pedestrians
- Always use extreme caution to avoid striking pedestrians wherever they may be, no matter who has the right of way
Crayola ColorCycle Program
Forest Grove is kicking off 2020 by participating in a marker recycling program called Crayola ColorCycle. Crayola and K-12 students across North America are banding together to help kids understand the importance of their role in protecting the environment. Since 2013 the ColorCycle program has repurposed more than 70 tons of expended markers, using the most advanced plastic conversion technologies to make wax compounds for asphalt, roofing shingles and composite lumber, and to generate electricity through waste to energy recovery. These repurposing efforts help us care for the environment by reusing products, preserving resources, and reducing the volume of used markers going to landfills.
We encourage each of our classrooms to create a collection box for used markers. When it gets full, a student can bring the markers to the central collection box located in the waiting area of the front office. When the central box is full, one of our parents will collect the markers and send them off to Crayola. Great news…Crayola will accept ALL brands of plastic markers, including dry erase markers, highlighters and sharpies!
Thank you for your participation!

How to Stay Connected to the PTA
Have you turned in your PTA Membership form yet? If not, it's not too late!
Why join PTA? The number one reason to join the Parent Teacher Association is to benefit your child. In doing so, you also help your school. But there are many more PTA advantages:
Get Connected. There’s no better way to know what’s happening in your school.
Speak Up. PTA can be a way for you to more effectively suggest change at your child’s school.
Witness Improvement. By getting involved at your child’s school you’ll be part of the solution, helping make positive changes.
Be a Role Model. By becoming a PTA member, you’ll be demonstrating to your child the importance you place on education.
