New Beginnings and Celebrating Accomplishments
This was an historic week at Fletcher Elementary School. Monday was our first VAPA day of the year. The students learned traditional Indian dance, honed their acting skills, practiced singing, and made class quilts. Check out the highlights down below.
On Wednesday, we launched our reorganized classrooms to rebalance staffing for the opening of our new UTK classroom. Please continue to check your email for any potential updates as we navigate this change together.
Yesterday, Area Superintendent, Michel Cazary, and Board Vice President, Shana Hazan, visited Fletcher to learn about our application to become the first Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) elementary school in San Diego County and only the second RAMP school in San Diego Unified. ASCA is the American School Counselor Association and sets very high counseling program framework standards. Being recognized as a RAMP school is the highest honor a program can receive. We submitted our application today, and will find out if we are receiving the recognition by Winter Break. This is the culmination of three years of work by our incredibly dedicated school counselor, Ms. Hinch, and we are so proud of the effort she's put forth to develop the counseling program to meet the needs of our students upon emerging from the pandemic.
Later tonight, Principal Friedenberg will be in Washington D.C. receiving our America's Healthiest School award on behalf of Fletcher Elementary. Fletcher was one of 30 schools in SDUSD to receive this recognition. There are nine different categories in which a school can receive the America's Healthiest School Award. Last year we were recognized for one of the nine categories. This year we are being recognized for four of the nine.
Next week, we'll be participating in the Great California Shake-out at 10:19AM on 10/19. Please speak with your student(s) about the importance of taking an earthquake safety drill seriously. On Friday, you won't want to miss our first Family Friday of the year. Join your student for breakfast at 8AM, then we're hosting the SDUSD math department for an inservice on how families can support their students at home with the "new" way of learning math. Stick around afterwards for a free jazz concert from the Danny Green Trio. The group will be teaching our students about the history of jazz and different styles from around the world. Light refreshments will be served and families who attend will get free tools for supporting with foundational addition/subtraction and multiplication/division fact families.
FAMILY FRIDAY NEXT WEEK!!
We are excited to announce our first Family Friday of the year on October 20th. Come and join your student for breakfast. Afterwards, the SDUSD Math Department has prepared a presentation on understanding the changes in the way in which math is taught so you can best support your student at home. If you have time, stick around for our "World of Jazz" assembly with the Danny Green Trio. Students will learn the history of jazz and styles from around the world.
Student of the Week
This week's Student of the Week is Skye in Mr. León's 4th/5th class. Skye is a respectful and quiet student who always follows our school and classroom expectations. She participates in classroom discussions and raises her hand to ask for clarification. In other words, Skye has a consistent interest in learning and helps others along the way. She is honest and lets me know what she needs in order to succeed in class. Skye has perfect attendance and is an overall example of how a student should be. Well done, Skye! Thanks for exemplifying what it means to be a leader at Fletcher Elementary School!
