SHAZIE BRYANT WINS HTMS NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC GEOBEE
Local Students Compete in the First Round of National Competition
Trussville, Alabama January, 22, 2020—Students from HTMS participated in the school competition of the National Geographic GeoBee on Wednesday, January 22. Shazie Bryant an eight grade student, won first place, with Quinn Miller a seventh grade student, winning second place.
The school competition is the first round in the annual National Geographic GeoBee, a geography competition designed to inspire and reward students’ curiosity about the world. Questions cover not only geography, but also ancient and world civilizations, cultures, and physical features.
The National Geographic Society developed the GeoBee in 1989 in response to concern about the lack of geographic knowledge among young people in the United States. Over more than three decades, more than 120 million students have learned about the world through participation in the GeoBee.
School champions, including Shazie, will take an online qualifying test; up to 100 of the top test scorers in each state then become eligible to compete in their State GeoBee. The winners of the State GeoBees receive an all-expenses-paid trip to participate in the GeoBee national championship in Spring 2020. Students will be competing for cash prizes, scholarships and an all-expenses-paid Lindblad expedition to the Galápagos Islands aboard the National Geographic Endeavour ll. Learn more at www.natgeobee.org.
In addition to the GeoBee, National Geographic also offers classroom resources, student experiences and professional development opportunities for educators.

SUMMER 2020 Information on the YMCA Camp at Paine Elementary...REGISTRATION OPENS MONDAY!
If you want Summer Child Care in a Trussville City Schools facility for your elementary student, please read the information below about the YMCA Summer Day Camp Program.
We are excited about new opportunities for students through the YMCA!
YMCA Camp at Paine Elementary
2020 Frequently Asked Questions
Contact: ymcadaycamp@ymcabham.org
When does registration begin?
Registration opens online Monday, February 3 for all regardless if you are a YMCA member or not. To register, visit www.bhamycamp.org. Once on that page, click on “YMCA Camp at Paine Elementary” to the right. You will then click on your child’s age group to register under the “registration information” tab. (Links are live on February 3.) If you have trouble registering, please email us at childcare@ymcabham.org
How does the deposit work?
When you register for camp, you choose the weeks you need. The $10 deposit per week holds your camper’s spot in camp. It is applied to the weekly fee. Once camp starts, only the balance will be due. ( Example: $135 weekly fee - $10 deposit = $125 due once camp starts).
Is there a vacation week?
We do not have a vacation week. We realize plans change and our cancellation/transfer policies allow for changes to be made two weeks in advance without penalty. You can view those policies on our website under the “registration information” tab.
Is there a max number of children allowed to attend:
Our capacity is currently 180 campers per week. This was determined as a starting point based on past participation in YMCA and TCS summer programs. Increased capacity can occur provided we have the staff available. Registration ends April 30th which will allow us ample time to plan for additional campers.
Is lunch provided?
Lunch is not provided. We ask that campers bring a full lunch, 2 snacks, and a refillable water bottle each day while at camp. Refrigeration isn’t available.
What is your camper to counselor ratio?
At the YMCA, we maintain a ratio of 1:12-15 for our camp group. Ratios can be lowered as needed for campers who may require extra support while attending camp.
How are campers grouped?
Campers are grouped by rising grade (1st-2nd, 3rd-4th and 5th-6th). All activities are done in these activities within these age groups with the exception of camp-wide assemblies. During camp-wide assemblies, campers are still grouped together with their age group.
Will campers swim?
Yes, campers will travel by bus once a week to swim at the Trussville YMCA. All campers will be swim tested every week. Lifejackets will be provided and required for campers who do not pass the swim test.
What are the program hours?
Camp Hours:
7:00am-9:00am Morning Extended Care
9:00am-4:00pm Camp Day
4:15pm-6:00pm Afternoon Extended Care
Will campers go on field trips?
We will not go on field trips for camp (with the exception of our Annual Thingamajig Invention Convention) and will reinvest those resources into our programming and camp staff. We made this change last summer at several of our camps and found the outcome was far greater than relying on field trips for programming. While field trips feel fun and exciting, we found that we are able to engage campers in more activities on-site and bring in special guests to serve as “in-house” field trips.
Does the YMCA serve students with special needs?
The YMCA seeks to serve all students of all abilities in a safe environment where they can thrive. If your child will need accommodations to attend Summer Camp, please contact us at ymcadaycamp@ymcabham.org to discuss those needs.
Will the YMCA replace the current TCS Summer Program?
Yes
Why is the TCS Summer Care Program changing to the YMCA Summer Day Camp at Paine Elementary School?
The YMCA has a successful summer day camp program that offers a variety of curriculum based themes for students. The new Literacy Act requires each district to provide a summer reading program for identified elementary students. Paine Elementary School is the location for the summer literacy intervention program. The YMCA summer day camp program and TCS reading intervention program will complement each other in one location. Having all summer programming on one campus provides access for students who need both programs.
Will current TCS employees be considered for reemployment with the YMCA?
The YMCA desires to hire experienced child care workers and has encouraged the current TCS staff to apply and note their TCS experience on the application.
Will this program only serve students enrolled in Trussville City Schools?
The YMCA is committed to serving students in Trussville and surrounding areas. The YMCA will continue to provide a summer day camp option at the Trussville Y open for all. Our additional location at Paine Elementary will be open to students enrolled in Trussville City Schools. Having two locations allows us to further our reach to serve even more children in the community.
How many children attended the TCS Summer Care Program last year? 125 How many children will be a part of this program now?
The YMCA is working to hire staff to serve up to 180 day campers per week. Increased capacity can occur provided we have the staff available. Registration ends April 30th which will allow us ample time to plan for additional campers.
Will all kids, regardless if they’re students in TCS, be able to attend the summer day camp at Paine?
No. The YMCA is committed to serving students in Trussville and surrounding areas. The YMCA will continue to provide a summer day camp option at the Trussville Y open for all. Our additional location at Paine Elementary will be open to students enrolled in Trussville City Schools. Having two locations allows us to further our reach to serve even more children in the community and keep the camper ratios at 1:12-15.

Physics Quidditch
Advanced Physics students Tana Smith & Daniel Cosby were challenged to apply their understanding of physics to score a goal in Quidditch. Each group was given an initial velocity, angle of launch, and initial height of launcher, and were required to calculate where the Quidditch goal (ring stand) must be placed to score a goal at the maximum altitude (by determining the horizontal and vertical distance). Students were able to reduce the size of the goal in order to receive bonus points—the smallest goal (pictured in the video) earned an additional 10 bonus points.

TRUSSVILLE COUNTS .... 2020 CENSUS
The 2020 Census is very important to the future of the City of Trussville and the State of Alabama.
Did you know?
The Census directly impacts funding for Trussville for the next decade.
Gasoline tax funds, including the new 10-cent gasoline tax are based upon our Census count for the following ten years.
Internet sales tax is distributed on a population basis from the Census count.
Capital Improvement funds and other funds from the State are allocated by Census population.
Businesses use census data to determine where to build offices, stores, and industrial facilities that create jobs and tax dollars in our community.
Census statistics are the basis for many federal dollars and grant funding, including programs such as Medicaid, WIC, National School Lunch programs, and Head Start.
Each person counted generates almost $1,600 in federal funding for our State and communities.
Alabama may lose up to two seats in Congress with less than an 80% response statewide. We may lose one seat with less than 90% response. This dilutes our voice in Washington, D.C.
How can you respond to the 2020 Census?
Online
Telephone
Mail
Watch for an invitation letter mid-March 2020 that has your unique ID to respond
Your data is confidential and is not shared with IRS, law enforcement, courts, or immigration. Your answers are for statistical purposes only.
It is your civic duty to say, “I count” by completing your Census questionnaire.

Children's of Alabama Flu Information
Information Below provided by Children's of Alabama
1600 7th Avenue S
Birmingham, AL 35233
205.638.9100
Sometimes mistaken for the common cold, the flu (influenza) causes more symptoms and can sometimes cause serious illness. Fortunately, most kids who get the flu can get over the infection without any problems. The flu occurs most often in the winter months.
Signs and Symptoms:
- Fever
- Headache
- Loss of appetite
- Sore throat
- Nausea and vomiting
- Dizziness
- Chills
- Muscle aches
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Diarrhea
- Tiredness.
What to Do:
- Call the child's doctor
- Encourage rest
- Keep the child hydrated with plenty of fluids - breast milk or formula for babies, water, juice, ice pops, and cool drinks for older kids but no caffeinated drinks
- Relieve symptoms with: A warm bath, a cool-mist humidifier, saline or saltwater) nose drops, acetaminophen or ibuprofen (check package for correct dosage)
Never give aspirin to a child with the flu. Do not give cough or cold medicine to children under 6 years old (call the doctor first for older kids).
Seek medical care if the child has:
- Symptoms that get worse
- Trouble breathing
- A stiff neck
- A severe cough
- A fever and is 3 months or younger
- A headache that doesn't go away after taking acetaminophen or ibuprofen
Seek Emergency Medical Care if the child:
- is working to breathe (using chest muscles to get air in and out
- is lethargic (hard to wake up your child
- child is confused and unsteady
- physician recommends coming to the ED
Think Prevention!
- Get the flu vaccine each year
- Try to avoid large crowds during flu season
- Wash hands well and often
For educational purposes only. For specific medical advice, diagnosis and treatment, consult your doctor. Information copyright of the Children's of Alabama Patient Health and Safety Information. 8/19
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Children's of Alabama Flu Testing and Treatment
Information provided by Children's of Alabama:
Testing for the Flu
- Getting a flu shot each year is the best way to protect your child from the flu.
- Most of the time, doctors will use the symptoms your child has to diagnose your child with the flu.
- Occasionally, a rapid flu test is used to see if your child has the flu. But, many children with the flu have a negative test and children without the flu will sometimes have a positive test so your medical provider today will decide whether or not a flu test is needed.
- If a flu test is done, a nasal swab is needed for the test and it will take about an hour to get results.
Treatment for the Flu
- The gest treatement of the flu involves rest and lots of fluids.
- Give acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin) for fever. NEVER give aspirin to a child with the flu.
- The flu is a virus and cannot be treated with antibiotics.
Tamiflu
- Tamilflu is a medicine that may be given after a positive flu test.
- Some side effects of Tamiflu are nausea and vomiting.
Who should get Tamiflu?
- Not every patient with the flu will get a prescription for Tamiflu. Only children with a higher than average risk for complications of flu will be treated with the medication.
If your child has the flu but is not given Tamiflu, the best treatment is still to get plenty of rest, drink plenty of fluids, and take acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin) as needed for fever or pain.
When should I call the doctor?
- Symptoms that get worse
- Trouble breathing
- Stiff neck
- Severe cough
- Fever in a child that is 3 months or younger
- Headache that doesn't go away after acetaminophen or ibuprofen
All information provided by Children's of Alabama.
After the groups are formed, if any parent or volunteer would like to form a team, we can set up a time to create the team number as well as hold a meeting with the parents who want their kids to participate. During the meeting, the Team Manager and Wayne will go over the format for JTT as well as establish expectations and costs. JTT registration will take place after we have enough interest to form a team.
