Niton Central News
October 7th
Principals Message
Dear Niton Central School Community,
As we close in on the end of our first week in October, let me start by wishing everyone a happy and safe Thanksgiving long weekend, with there being no school on Monday. Looking ahead, there's lots coming up, so here's a quick run down!
You may see two new faces joining our school. We'd like to welcome Miss Paige Ekdahl who is joining Mrs. Ford's 4/5 class as a student teacher from the University of Alberta, and our new EA, Mrs. Heather De Ruiter. We're excited to have you both join us!
Volleyball has a fairly busy schedule, with the Knights hosting Grand Trunk on Tuesday (11th) and Pine Grove on Thursday (13th). Check the upcoming events section for a detailed list of games and practices! The games are open to spectators, and concession will be open, so come on in and support our teams!
Proofs from Picture Day arrived today and will be sent home with students! Orders are due back to the office by October 17th, or you can order online. Directions are included in the package. If you are looking for retakes, or for students who were unable to make the first round, Retake Day is scheduled for October 25th.
Our Hot Lunch program is firing back up starting with Chicken Nuggets on Thursday, October 13th, and will take place every two weeks. Thank you to Miranda Morden for coordinating, and to all the parents volunteering to provide this program for our students. We are looking for additional volunteers to help prepare Hot Lunch. Mrs. Morden has requested that anyone willing to help contact her at 780-712-6620!
We have Edson Public Health booked at the school on November 4th to perform grade 6 and grade 9 immunizations. They will reach out directly to families for consent. Additionally, consent forms went home for Dental screening and Fluoride Varnish Applications for Junior K and K-6 students. If you have not done so, please return these forms as soon as possible if you wish to participate. If you did not receive a copy, please contact Brandy at the school office and we will send a new copy home. As always, no treatments/immunizations can be provided without parent/guardian consent.
Take a look below to see some of the many great things that happened at NCS over the last few weeks!

Special Notice! Athletics Fee Reduction
In consultation with the School Council, I have made the decision to reduce our Athletics fees by roughly 50% for the 2022-23 school year. I say roughly because some fees may be slightly over or under half as we try to keep the numbers somewhat rounded.
For those who may not be aware, in 2021, the Niton Sports Council voted to dissolve, and made a significant donation to our school. As the pandemic impacted a number of school activities, this donation remained unused. In order to ensure this money is being used to the benefit of our students, we will use it to facilitate this cost reduction. Additionally, we will draw from this fund to offset bussing to and from sports games and as needed, to support the purchase of new/replacement equipment.
Please be aware that at this time, the fee reduction applies only to the 2022-23 school year, after which time, fees should be expected to return to their previous rates.

Reminders
Please remember that if your child(ren) are sick, keep them at home to promote school health!
Please make sure to send extra clothes in case your child(ren) gets wet or muddy.
Dirty shoes will not be allowed in the gym, please make sure your child(ren) has indoor shoes and shoes/boots for outside.
With GYPSD's new accounting program, all monies coming into the school will be processed through PowerSchool. For example, this includes payments for sports fees and Jr. Kindergarten fees.
Parents/Guardians who have not yet set up their PowerSchool Parent Portal yet should keep an eye out for letters coming home with their children with instructions on how to do so. While this change will simplify payments in the long term, we know there will be a transition period as parents/guardians and school staff get used to the new system. If we can provide any assistance in setting up your Parent Portal, please don't hesitate to contact this school.
