WHAT'S HAPPENING

Math: This week we finished Topic 8. We worked on expanding numbers (i.e. 9 tens + 4 ones = 94, 90 + 4 = 94). We also challenged ourselves to make numbers in different ways by breaking apart a ten rod into 10 ones.

Reader's Workshop: This week we continued to read with fluency in our character books. We read with partners so they could encourage us to add more expression when needed. We noticed how some words give clues to how the character is feeling. For example, "Harvey shouted" clues readers in on how they should sound when they are reading Harvey's dialogue.

Writer's Workshop: This week we continued our nonfiction writing unit. We made sub-headers on each page to help organize our topic into smaller chunks. We also worked on writing facts, not our ideas or opinions. As nonfiction writers, we also discussed how pictures look different in nonfiction books (diagrams, etc).

Social Studies: This week we kept working with maps. We focused on land and water. We learned about the continents and oceans all over the world.

LEADERS IN ROOM 108

This week was an amazing week of leadership in our first grade classroom. We have been proactive all week by helping our peers. Our math topic has included using a LOT of unifix cubes, which means a lot of clean up. Thank you to Vincent for ALWAYS volunteering to help! Special shoutout to Anabel & Mary for synergizing to put away (and color code) all of our cubes on Wednesday. My 21 little leaders are always willing to help keep the room clean & tidy :)
