WHAT'S HAPPENING
Math: This week we finished Topic 8. We worked on expanding numbers (i.e. 9 tens + 4 ones = 94, 90 + 4 = 94). We also challenged ourselves to make numbers in different ways by breaking apart a ten rod into 10 ones.
Reader's Workshop: This week we continued to read with fluency in our character books. We read with partners so they could encourage us to add more expression when needed. We noticed how some words give clues to how the character is feeling. For example, "Harvey shouted" clues readers in on how they should sound when they are reading Harvey's dialogue.
Writer's Workshop: This week we continued our nonfiction writing unit. We made sub-headers on each page to help organize our topic into smaller chunks. We also worked on writing facts, not our ideas or opinions. As nonfiction writers, we also discussed how pictures look different in nonfiction books (diagrams, etc).
Social Studies: This week we kept working with maps. We focused on land and water. We learned about the continents and oceans all over the world.
