A Note from Principal Curran
Updates from Thorpe Creek Elementary April 2022
Dear Thorpe Creek Families,
Early in March our 3rd grade students took the state required IREAD-3 reading assessment. IREAD-3 is an online, multiple choice test that measures foundational reading standards through grade 3. There are three components to this test:
Word Recognition, Fluency, and Vocabulary Development
Identifying beginning, middle, and ending sounds, identifying synonyms and antonyms and using context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words in a text
Comprehension and analysis of nonfiction and informational text
Comparing and responding to grade-level informational text by making connections and/or predictions while reading and identifying important information within text
Comprehension and analysis of literacy text
Comparing and responding to grade-level literacy text by recalling and/or describing story elements and identifying the theme and narrator of different literacy genres
We have received our students' results and are using the information to continue to responsively meet each child's reading needs.
As a school, Thorpe Creek earned a 92% pass rate on this spring's IREAD-3 assessment. Our pass rate may improve, as well, after summer IREAD-3 school. Congratulations to our students, teachers, and families! IREAD-3 results indicate strong foundational reading skills in our early grades at TCE.
Did you know? Students that did not pass the initial assessment will attend a summer reading program in HSE Schools to continue to grow their reading skills, strategies, and dispositions.
ILEARN
Students in grades 3 and 4 will take the state required ILEARN assessment April 18 - May 13. ILEARN is Indiana’s online computer-adaptive assessment designed to measure your child’s proficiency of the Indiana Academic Standards for Grades 3-8, Biology, and U.S. Government. ILEARN fulfills both state and federal accountability requirements and is Indiana’s summative accountability assessment. Enroll Your Child In Kindergarten For The 2022-2023 School Year Now!
Congratulations TCE Math Bowl! This year TCE had so many 4th grade students interested in being on a math team that we were able to field 3 teams! Thank you to Mrs. Pugel, Mr. Scott, and Miss Carter for coaching our students on all things mathematical!
Did you know? This was Mrs. Pugel's 20th year as a Math Bowl coach!

UPDATE! Fourth Graders Will Receive a Video Welcome From the Intermediate Schools
Due to a shortage of bus drivers and the ILEARN testing schedules at the intermediate schools, there has been a change in plans. Students will not travel to the intermediate schools for a visit during the school day this spring.
Here is the new plan for all 4th graders in HSE as of April 2022:
Parents and guardians will receive a video welcome in an email from their child's intermediate school during the week of May 9th, as well.
Each intermediate school will host an Open House for students and families prior to the start of the 2022-2023 school year. Your child's intermediate school will communicate the date/time directly to you prior to the start of the school year.
Families do not need to enroll their child in the intermediate school (nor will you need to enroll in junior high or high school). Once your child has been enrolled in HSE Schools, they remain enrolled and will transition from grade level to grade level within the school system, including transitioning to new campuses.

Thank You TCE Families!
To all of you that waited in long lines for pancakes at our PTO pancake dinner - thank you! Wasn't the turnout amazing?! It was so good to see our families enjoying one another in our school again. A BIG thank you to TCE parents Mrs. Gilmore and Mrs. Olson for all of the preparation prior to the evening and for working with the teachers all night long in the kitchen, as well as cleaning up afterwards! Thank you to the parents that jumped in to help clean tables, greet guests, and help as needed. It was a fun and memorable event!
We are grateful for such supportive families!
