To our Chiloquin staff and families
Sept. 10, 2020
Dear Chiloquin staff and families,
Please know we are with you.
Some of you have lost homes. Hundreds have had to evacuate and are now waiting – and hoping for the best. Our hearts go out to everyone who is living with uncertainty, destruction, and loss.
We want to help, and are trying to contact our staff and families. If possible, we are asking staff and families to check in with our schools -- Chiloquin Elementary, 541-783-2338; and Chiloquin Junior/Senior High, 541-783-2321 – to let us know you are safe and if you have any immediate needs.
The school district stands ready to coordinate with and support all emergency response efforts as needed. We currently are working with organizers at the Evacuation Center at Kla-Mo-Ya Casino and the Klamath County Fairgrounds with plans to provide free meals for children ages 1-18.
- UPDATED: The SOFMP is sending people to this Facebook page now for Two Four Two Fire information: https://www.facebook.com/TwoFourTwoFire/ A good source of information on the Two Four Two Fire is the South Central Oregon Fire Management Partnership. The Facebook page is regularly updated -- https://www.facebook.com/SCOFMPFIREINFO -- and information is available at their website at https://www.scofmp.org/.
- Bus drivers and food services staff will be delivering meals in the Chiloquin area Friday. Meals also can be picked from 11 a.m. to noon Friday at Chiloquin Elementary School. Click HERE for times and locations. (The Fort Klamath route will not be run, but the school will contact those families and get meals to them.) Five lunches and five breakfasts will be provided.
- Chiloquin Schools are asking that students check in with their teachers by logging into their regularly scheduled classes online if they are currently able to. Chiloquin staff also are reaching out to staff and school families.
- The Red Cross is collecting donations at Kla-Mo-Ya Casino for local community members who have been displaced by the fire.
- Donations also are being accepted at the Klamath County Fairgrounds, Exhibit Hall 2 (blue building). Items needed include non-perishable food items, diapers, wipes, formula, baby food, clothing, cash, fuel cards, bottle water, grocery store gift cards, pet food and supplies. Evacuees who need resources should visit the blue building just inside the main gate of the fairgrounds.
The fire still threatens homes and neighborhoods, and changing winds today likely will create new challenges. We are extremely grateful to all emergency personnel for their around-the-clock efforts and incredible commitment to our communities.
We send thoughts, encouragement, and hope to all our Chiloquin staff and families. Please be safe and take care.
Sincerely,
Glen Szymoniak, superintendent, Klamath County School District
Rita Hepper, principal, Chiloquin Elementary
Scott Preston, principal, Chiloquin Junior/Senior High
