January Monthly Memo

Happy January Families!

Happy New Year and welcome back! We are excited to kickoff our 2nd semester and continue watching our 2nd graders learn and grow through personalized learning experiences. In December, we completed MAP testing in both reading and math. Your child's teacher will communicate these scores with you. Also, Quarter 2 report cards will go home on January 11th! We had a lot of fun seeing The Nutcracker and enjoyed Grinch Day before our winter break. Our Fall PBL project came to a conclusion with a phenomenal ending, exhibition, and outcome! Thank you for your support of Dixie and our classrooms!

Smiles,

Ms. Allen

Learning in Second Grade

Fall Project Based Learning

Our Fall PBL project had a wonderful outcome and we are so proud of the students for their engagement and dedication to being good citizens! Our students were able to learn how to persuade others to get involved in their community. Students presented Google slideshows, videos, posters/flyers, and writing pieces/speeches! They had 100% choice in how to demonstrate their learning. We saw so much kindness and compassion as a result of this project. Many students worked hard outside of school to raise money or even donated their birthday money to our little dog house the benefited the Lexington Humane Society. Our complex raised $614+ over 2 weeks and it was dropped off during winter break! Thank you for those who attended our exhibition night - the students enjoyed having a large audience to show off their work!

Spring Project Based Learning

We have already started planning our next PBL! Stay tuned for more information as we reveal the next learning experience for the spring semester.

More Fun!

The Nutcracker Field Trip

We went on a field trip to see The Nutcracker in December! The show and dancers did a wonderful job. It was a lot of fun! We have more field trips to look forward to this spring: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory play & the Kentucky Horse Park!

Grinch Day

Second grade hosted our annual Grinch Day on the final day of school before our winter break! It was so fun to see the kids wearing green. We read the story, did activities about the story, ate popcorn, drank Grinch Punch, and watched the adorable animated film!

REMINDERS

Report Cards:

We will be sending home Quarter 2 report cards on January 11th! Please empty the envelope and keep everything from the inside at home. Also, sign the envelope and return to your child's teacher. Thank you!

Roller Skating in PE:

Students are enjoying their roller skating unit in PE. Please make sure to send students in long socks (you may keep a pair in their backpack if you wish) on their PE days this month. Students get to skate a total of 5 times!

Take-Home Folders:

Please check and empty folders each night!

Dressing for the Weather:

Please make sure to send your child with a coat each day. Our recess is at 10:30 am and it is usually chilly outside, especially in the winter. We want to be able to go outside as much as the weather allows! Thank you!

What We're Learning:

Each week, your child will bring home a paper that is called "What We're Learning." This paper is a resource for you to know what we are working on in reading and how you can help at home! This is not mandatory, but we do encourage you to look over the words with your child and have them read 15-20 minutes nightly.

Breakfast at School:

If your child needs to eat breakfast at school, please arrive by 7:30 a.m. Instruction begins at 7:45 a.m. and we want to make sure they have time to eat before our day begins!

Transportation Changes:

Any transportation changes must be in writing and turned into the front office. Ms. Mullins is in charge of transportation.
