Responsibility

What is responsibility?

Responsibility means having control over something. When you are in control of something, you are responsible for whatever happens to that thing whether it is tangible or not. Responsibility is very important to take serious because it can have a serious affect on you depending on how you deal with the things you are responsible for. Throughout this flyer I will be explaining to you how being responsible for something affected a character in the novel Frankenstein.

"Human beings, their feelings and passions, would indeed be degraded if such a wretch as I felt pride. Justine, poor happy Justine, was as innocent as I, and she suffered the same charge; she died for it; and I am the cause of this- I murdered her. William, Justine, and Henry, they all died by my hands." Chapter 22 page 163

In this quote Victor is expressing how the creature that he created killed several people and it is all his fault. Victor did not intend on the creature getting upset and committing murder it's just what happened. But since it did happen, Victor is mostly at fault since he is the one who created the murderer, also making him somewhat of a murderer.

"The different accidents of life are not as changeable as the feelings of human nature. I had worked hard for nearly two years, for the sole purpose of infusing life into an inanimate body." Chapter 5 page 42

This quote is revealing that accidents in life that happen naturally are inevitable. You cannot avoid the things that just happen. However, you can do something about the feelings of human nature. In this case, Victor had created his own creature all by himself. The thing that he could not control is how the creature would end up once created. He did not know that he was going to kill people and cause havoc to Victor's life. Even though Victor could not control these things, he was still responsible for all actions by the creature because he is the one who created him.

"I did not dare return to the apartment which I inhabited, but felt impelled to hurry on, although drenched by the rain which poured from a black and comfortless sky." Chapter 5 page 44

This quote is simply explaining that if Victor were to go to his apartment, he would have to do with all of these problems, one being his creation of man. If he would have gone back to his apartment he would have to take responsibility in making the situation safe again. The creature was very dangerous and Victor did not intend on that being the case during his process of creating man.

"Shall each man find a wife for his bosom, and each beast have his mate, and I be alone? I had feelings of affection, and they were requited by detestation and scorn." Chapter 20 page 146

In this quote the creature is complaining because of the situation that he was created into. He was put into a bad situation to begin with, and there is nothing really he can do to change that. He is upset because he is lonely, sad, and worried because he is no friends. He is upset at his creator, Victor, for putting him in this situation. He is still responsible for all actions that he does whether good or bad.

"Do your duty towards me, and I will do mine towards you and the rest of mankind." Chapter 10 page 81

This quote is revealing that the simplicity of being responsible for duties that would benefit other people is rewarding. The devil simply states that as long as Victor obeys his duty responsibility of not funneling hatred and abandonment towards him, then he will leave him and the rest of mankind at peace. He is very lonely and living a miserable life within himself. The darkness he has shows a bad reflection on his creator, Victor. It shows a bad reflection on Victor because he is fully responsible for all things that happen and go on with his creation, in this case it being man. Victor is responsible for all crimes and darkness that he brings to people because he is the one who created him. Victor put him in a difficult predicament to begin with by creating him under circumstances that he is not familiar with, leading him to do unreasonable things.

"Human beings, their feelings and passions, would indeed be degraded if such a happy wretch as I felt pride. Justine, poor happy Justine, was as innocent as I, and she suffered the same charge; she died for it; and I am the cause of this-I murdered her. William. Justine, and Henry-they all died by my hands." Chapter 22 page 163

In this quote, Victor is blaming himself and taking full responsibility for the deaths of William, Justine, and Henry. He realizes that since he created the creature that committed these horrible murders, he is also at blame for the outcome of the actions. Even though the creature made the choices on his own, Victor still gave him the life and capability to do so. I am sure there is nothing more Victor wants than to gain the ability back to change what he has done. Not once did he intend on this happening, but unfortunately they did under the creatures will.
RESPONSIBILITY

Are teens responsible?

Many opinions are thrown around in today's world about the ongoing topic of the responsibility of teens. In my personal opinion, I think the argument both ways. I say this because there are several different types of teens in our world. Some feel that just because they still have their parents surrounding and helping them, they do not have anything to take care of. They make excuses for not taking responsibility in things that later affect them. Those are the irresponsible. Then, there are those who boldly take a stand and realize what responsibilities they have to take care of. They do not make excuses, they take care of their duties that are in front of them. Taking care of responsibilities shows what type of person you are and what you strive to be. You either do or you do not do it.I feel that teens these days are getting worse and worse with taking responsibility in things. They feel like they do not need to because their parents have sheltered them and caused them to have a closed mindset. The closed mindset that thinks that they cannot take responsibility in things because they may be too difficult or are afraid to fail. Taking responsibility in things grows you as an individual and makes you a stronger, more disciplined person.
