This Week at Silver Creek...

SC Families,

Happy December!

Our two elves, Silver & Creek, arrived this week from the North Pole. They are located in the main office at SC, but at night, they go around our building to ensure our campus and kiddos are safe and filled with the Holiday Spirit for the next school day! :)

Thank Y O U so much for all of your Christmas donations. Our halls are soon to be filled with Holiday Cheer! If you have any extra time to spare, the PTO would love for you to volunteer some time to help decorate our building for Christmas.

December Dress up days begin Monday. Scroll Down for more!

Our 3rd and 4th Grade Silver Creek CHAMPS represented us at the board meeting Monday night. They led us in the pledges for all in attendance. Great work, CHAMPS! (pic to the left)

For this semester, Hornet DEPOT ends on December 8th and will kick off next semester on January 23rd - more below!

MAP Math and MAP Reading Middle of Year testing opens 12/5. Your students get to show what they know and we will all get a chance to see their improvement from the beginning of the year. Teachers will send all of this data (including explanations) home before we get out for break.

Kinder report card testing begins next week as well.

Blackmon's Blurb - 3rd Grade Musical 12/15

Parents-

The 3rd grade musical will be on December 15th at 5:00 p.m. All third graders get to participate. The musical is set in a 50’s style diner, so students are welcome to dress in 50’s attire, but it is not required. Jeans and Christmas colors/shirt are just fine. Doors will open at 4:45 p.m. and students can come to the music room at that time.

Please email Mrs. Blackmon at Jblackmon@azleisd.net if you have questions. Thanks!

Please email our counselor, frances.heimke@azleisd.net if you have questions about the House Shirts! Our House Rally Success Day with our Students will be in December. We can't wait to celebrate their successes. More details below!

Thank you for bringing your student on time every day! Please keep it up. Let's get our attendance percentage WAY UP, Silver Creek! We want your kiddo here. I cannot stress this enough! :) PLEASE bring them every single day! Thank you, SC Families, for being so wonderful.

We have the BEST parents, grandparents, teachers, and staff here.

We truly are a community filled with CHAMPS!!

GREETINGS, SILVER CREEK FAMILY!

It is my honor to serve you as Silver Creek's Principal. Please use this newsletter to get to know our campus better. If you still have questions after reading through the information, please do not hesitate to email your student's teacher, office staff, or me! Silver Creek also has a Facebook (@Silver Creek Elementary), Twitter (@silvercreekazle), and a Website to keep families engaged, involved and informed.

I am very excited to be part of a school community with great students, parents, and educators. I will collaborate with you to build a nurturing, positive culture that promotes engagement and academic excellence for all learners. It is important for me that students, teachers, parents, and community members feel welcomed and encouraged to be part of each child’s learning experience. I believe that we are partners in continuing our district’s mission of making a difference to every child, every chance, every day. This will ensure our Hornets are on the path toward becoming AISD Graduates! In the end, it is always about the kids. Working with students, staff, and the community is not a job for me – it is a passion. I am a life-long teacher, life-long coach, as well as a life-long student. I am deeply committed to both the academic and emotional success of all of our learners at Silver Creek. I am proud to be an Azle Hornet, and look forward to getting to know all of our Silver Creek families this year!

Attendance Matters! Every Student, Every Day!

From our Azle ISD Handbook on Attendance:

Parents must document reasons for an absence for the absence to be considered excused. Parents of students in all grades shall provide written notice of why an absence occurred within two days of the absence unless there are extenuating circumstances as determined by the principal. Notice received after two days of the absence shall not be considered for establishing excused absences except in extenuating circumstances as determined by principal or superintendent.

Please email dsuratt@azleisd.net with parent/doctor notes.

Attendance makes a difference!

School starts at 7:45am and ends at 3:15pm.

Please help your child attend every minute they can.

Attending school every day = 100% attendance

Attending 4 days a week = 80% attendance = more than half a term missed per year.

Attending 3½ days each week = 70% attendance = more than a quarter of the school year missed.

An average attendance of 80% or less across a child’s school career adds up to missing a whole 2 years from school.

Being late for school reduces learning time. If your child is 5 minutes late every day they will miss three days of learning each year. If your child is 15 minutes late every day they will miss 2 weeks of learning each year.

Visitors to Campus

Campus doors will remain locked throughout the school day, and visitors are buzzed in from outside the main office. Inside the office, visitors will need to present an ID to receive a visitor’s badge that must be worn while in the building. Please return your visitor’s badge to the front office as you leave campus so that you can be signed out through our visitor tracking system.

Lunch with Your Student

You are welcome to come eat lunch with your student! Make sure to check in through the office and get a visitor’s badge. Please sit at the parent table with your student. You may bring in outside food, but only for you and your student. No other guests may eat with you at the parent table. The campus is closed to lunch visitors on various days throughout the school year. These dates will be communicated with our families in advance. Please make sure to get your student back in line with their class to return to instruction on time.

Volunteering

We love and appreciate our volunteers! If you want to help make copies or volunteer for events, we encourage you to get in touch with your child's teacher or the SILVER CREEK PTO! An Azle ISD approved background check is required for all volunteers on our campus. To protect instruction time, parents and volunteers are asked to go directly to the workroom after obtaining a visitor's badge in the front office. If you have a question for your child's teacher, please send them an email or leave them a message to call you during their conference time. While students are in the classroom, we ask that you understand and respect that the teacher's focus and attention should be on their students. If you would like to meet with your child’s teacher, please contact them to schedule a time to meet in advance.

Attendance

Attendance is important. Make sure to be on time everyday and stay the entire time. Anytime a student is not in class from 7:45-3:15 a note is required. After three days of absence, a doctor’s note is required.

Birthdays

You are welcome to send store bought, pre-packaged snacks/cupcakes to school, so that your student can celebrate their birthday with their classmates. Please do not send any homemade items.

FAQ ?!?!

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Can my child bring toys to school?

A: No, no toys are allowed, including "slime", Pokemon cards, or any items deemed a "toy" unless the teacher is asking for them for a special day. We also encourage no devices, phones, tablets, iPods, etc be brought to school. Q: What if I need to tell my child's teacher something quickly before school starts?

A: You will be asked to come into the front office and leave a message to be delivered to the teacher. Teachers are busy greeting students, monitoring breakfast in the classroom, and pulling intervention groups starting at 7:45 am. We ask that this time not be interrupted, and parents contact the teacher during their conference time by phone or via email.
