Marionettes at Galileo

Women in STEAM and Literacy Night at Schoolfield
Teachers, students, and parents at Schoolfield enjoyed a fun-filled, Literacy and STEAM night. The theme this year was "Women in STEAM." Each grade level had an awesome Literacy and STEAM station that linked to a famous woman in STEAM. For example, at one station, the students made rockets and read about Katherine Johnson. The Kindergarten station did an experiment to see how the heart pumps blood in recognition of Marie Daly. The 2nd grade team made a community connection with Danville Utilities and received information regarding the city’s water filtration system to provide students and parents. Students completed graphic organizers to organize their thinking and predict what was going to happen during the science experiment.
Wonderful World of Simple Machines at Park Avenue
The Virginia Repertory Theater presented the Wonderful World of Simple Machines to Park Avenue students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
"This lively, hands-on introduction to the scientific principles and properties of simple machines will provide your student an unforgettable close encounter with levers, inclined planes, screws, wedges, pulleys, and the wheel and axle. The antics of the actors and audience participation (with help from a special guest) will bring the concepts of simple machines alive for your students in a way no other encounter will. This acclaimed show is sure to educate as well as entertain."

Learning parts of plants at Park Avenue
Students in Mrs. Ferrell's first-grade class are learning about the parts of a plant. They took their knowledge and new plant vocabulary to draw out their STEAM pumpkin classroom project and show the sequence of adding their pumpkin to their container, it rotting, exposing the seeds, the seeds growing roots, then sprouting stems and leaves to eventually become another pumpkin!
