Character Trait and Mindfulness Activity of the Month
Every month, we focus on a character trait to instill great character into our cubs. The character trait for the month of March is Cooperation. Cooperation means working together nicely to get a job done. This is such an important skill for students, both in and out of the classroom. As a reminder, teachers will be choosing one student this month who has exhibited cooperation the most to represent his/her class as the Cub of the Month.
Women's History Month
March is Women’s History Month! Check out the counseling eCLASS page for read-alouds to highlight Women’s History Month!
March 11th is SEL Day
March 11th is SEL Day, a day to celebrate Social Emotional Learning. SEL is the process through which everyone acquires and applies the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions, achieve goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions. At Woodward Mill, we incorporate SEL through morning meetings in the classroom, encouraging reflection and conversation about diverse books, school-wide No Place for Hate programs, and pausing for teachable moments with our students.
Incorporating SEL is vital as research shows that children with strong social-emotional skills benefit academically and are more likely to graduate from high school and college.
2022 WMES Georgia Picture Book Winner
I Am A Tiger by Karl Newson
Thanks to all of our students that read and voted on their favorite Georgia Picture Book nominee! The Woodward Mill favorite book is I Am a Tiger, by Karl Newson and Ross Collins. Our school votes were sent to UGA to be included in the final state tally. We should know the state winner in the next couple of weeks!
Reading Rewards
I hope you are reading and logging your March minutes! Students that completed their February reading rewards log will receive their prize on Monday!
Monthly logs should reflect 20 different dates in the month, with at least 20 total minutes of reading for each date. Incomplete logs will not be accepted. Students can read independently or with their parents at home. After completing the monthly requirement, logs are returned to the homeroom teacher. Parent initials are required in order to verify the reading.
If you lose your log or find you need a replacement, monthly logs can be downloaded and printed from the media center link of the school website. Look for the Reading Rewards link on the left side of the media center website.
If you have any questions about the Reading Rewards program, refer to the reading rewards link on the media center page of the school website or contact Jennifer.Alden@gcpsk12.org.
