What Does Elementary School Counseling Look Like?
We will also review the components of a comprehensive school counseling program and discuss the critical work that principals are seeing in schools. Such as:
- ALERT Guide training
- vision and mission statements
- school counselor/administrator agreement
- closing the gap action plans tied to student data and the needs of the school
- school counseling advisory council that meets at least 2 times per year
- program planning (weekly, monthly calendars)
- results report based on school counseling goals
We will also be asking principals to share the critical work that school counselors do with students, families and co-workers in their school communities.

"FOR years, there has been a steady stream of headlines about the soaring mental health needs of college students and their struggles with anxiety and lack of resilience. Now, a growing number of educators are trying to bolster emotional competency not on college campuses, but where they believe it will have the greatest impact: in elementary schools." Advocacy for School Counseling
The Florida School Counselor Association (FSCA) held a Day on the Hill in Tallahassee on November 18th to rally support for a proposed School Counseling bill. School Counselors, school counselor educators, and school counseling district support team members from 3 counties in Florida spoke with Commissioner Pam Stewart and other House and Senate members about the proposed bill to define the role of school counselors and ensure at least one school counselor in every school in Florida.
