Lafayette School Corporation has scheduled three eLearning days for elementary students. The purpose is for students and staff to practice just in case the unthinkable would happen and we would have to close school for an extended length of time. During eLearning days, students learn from home utilizing their iPads and our Canvas app. Our eLearning days are scheduled for the following:

Hello. On Wednesday, September 14, we will have our first eLearning day for the 22-23 school year. Below is some information that you might find helpful:

1. Students should have their username and password.

2.Parents will be able to access their child’s user name and password on the PowerSchool parent portal if necessary.

3. The parent resource page has videos on how to connect to Wi-Fi, a tour of the Canvas app and how to submit assignments, and how to use ClassLink

Why does attendance matter? A lot of research has been done and the findings are not surprising! Students who attend school regularly are able to learn more, have fewer discipline problems, develop better study habits and often are more successful than students who do not.

The last few years, due to Covid, we were much more relaxed regarding attendance. However, this year, we will strictly be following LSC policy regarding attendance.

Our goal is to work together with families to help improve attendance. Please help your child have the opportunity to become academically successful by having them at school on time each and every day. It's one of the most important things you can do for your child!

1. Anytime a student has an exempt absence, the documentation must be brought to the school to be filed within three school days of the students return.
2. After a student has reached 6 absences, the parents will receive an attendance letter from the principal notifying the parent of attendance concerns. “Exempt” absences identified in 1-13 above in this section do not count toward this total of 6 absences.
3. After the student has reached 9 absences, the principal will send notification to the Office of Elementary Education.Parents will be notified of the state attendance law and further actions that may be taken if attendance problems continue.Parents are expected to contact the school principal to set up a conference regarding their student’s attendance. The principal may report the student’s absences to Truancy Mediation for further action. “Exempt” Absences identified in 1-13 above in this section do not count toward this total of 9 absences.
4. Habitual absences, 12 or greater, will be reported to the Truancy Mediation Officer (Truancy Mediation – Tippecanoe County Superior Court #3) for the consideration of the juvenile court.It will also be filed with Child Protective Services as possible educational neglect. A child can be retained and not promoted to the next grade level.

The Lafayette School Corporation is engaging with the school-community to listen and collect feedback through a series of listening posts for the development of a strategic plan. Your input is valued and needed in order to craft objectives, strategies, and actions steps for the strategic planning process. Staff are highly encouraged to drop in one to of the upcoming meetings to listen to what other stake-holders have to say and to add value to the conversation by sharing their own experiences, observations, and suggestions. Each listening post is attended by multiple school board members and district leaders which provides a great opportunity for your feedback to be heard. Children may bring a water bottle or thermos to school to go along with their school lunch. Students will place the water bottle in the lunch basket in their classroom. Students will be able to retrieve it before going through the lunch line. Daily we have students asking for cups for water. The children go to the drinking fountain and fill them up and proceed to spill water down the hallways and throughout the cafeteria. This has lead to a child slipping on the spilled water. If your child doesn't drink milk or would like water at lunch, we would appreciate if you would send it in to help prevent spilled water from open cups.

The Edgelea TPA invites your child and a Buddy to come to breakfast on September 15 or September 16 at 7:30 am in the Edgelea Gym. Donuts, juice, and coffee will be served. Each student may bring one buddy to breakfast. We will offer this same activity again second semester and each student will be able to bring a different (or the same) buddy to breakfast. We are limiting it to one buddy per child due to the logistics of hosting up to 400 people in our gym each morning.

We are asking families whose last name begins with the letters A-M come to breakfast on Thursday and families whose last name begins with the letters N-Z come on Friday. This is simply a suggestion. If you need to attend on a different morning, it is fine. You do not need to call, simply just show up on the day that works best for you. If you have children with two different last names, just show up on whatever day works best for you.

Parent Teacher conferences will be held on October 12 and 13. Some teachers may be able to schedule additional times to meet the specific needs of parents. Please watch for the scheduling forms to come home in the next week or two and return the forms promptly back to your child's teacher. Our Edgelea goal is to meet with 100% of our parents. All Edgelea students should spend 20 minutes a night either reading or being read to...or a combination. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD IS READING 20 MINUTES NIGHTLY!

Please continue to encourage your child to read ALL SUMMER long. It makes a HUGE difference in their reading skills/levels. Consider visiting the Edgelea library and the public library. Children love books and it is a FREE activity. Show your children that you love books, too. It is a "life-changer" but the time to start is NOW. Often parents wonder, "what can I do to help my child succeed?" This is the answer. Read to your children. Have them read. Share the love of reading with them. It makes school and learning so much easier and enjoyable. Set them up for SUCCESS!

Unfortunately, lunches will NOT be free this year. The state is no longer paying for all students lunches. However, breakfast will continue to be served at no charge to parents.
