6TH GRADE NEWSLETTER

JUNE 2022 EDITION

7TH GRADE, HERE WE COME!

It's hard to believe it is the end of the school year! It feels like yesterday that your children were wide-eyed 6th graders who were making the transition to middle school, while also attending school in-person, all year for the first time since 3rd grade. As I've said repeatedly, they constantly rose to the challenge and became Kreps Cougars that we're extremely proud of.

We were able to see so much growth academically and socially as they reacclimated to what it was to be a student, friend, and part of the school community. As you take the next couple of months to relax and recharge, I encourage you to have your children do a few things:

  • Reflect on what their 6th grade year was like. What do they feel went well, what do they want to improve upon?
  • Spend time with family and friends.
  • READ, READ, READ!!

It has been my absolute pleasure working with and getting to know them this year, and I look forward to continuing our journey in September. Enjoy your summer and see you soon. Miss everyone already!

DINOSAURS, FOSSILS, AND MICKEY D'S??!!

For the first time in three years, our 6th graders were able to enjoy each other's company outside of the building through our field trip to the New Jersey State Museum. Students learned about the origins of animal flight, going back to the days of dinosaurs, while also learning about the wealth of fossils that have been found right here in New Jersey! To wrap up the trip, students ordered some food at local fast food restaurants, while sharing some laughs with their classmates.

ACADEMY GAMES PART 2!

To follow up on our opening of school Academy Games, Kappa and Sigma had another opportunity to compete against one another at the end of the year. Students competed in a number of different games, and the competition was at an all time high. When all was said and done, Sigma Academy came out on top! Get some rest this summer, as we'll be waiting to see if Sigma is able to win back to back come September!

LOOK AT MY HAIR!

During our electricity unit, students explored static electricity and the flow of electrons using a Van De Graaff Generator. When a student puts their hands on the sphere, the electrons spread out onto that person as they repel from the other electrons. They are most obvious in a person's hair because the like charges of the electrons repel each other and cause the hairs to stand up and spread away from each other.

FAST AND FURIOUS!

Within the course of our physics unit, students were presented with the challenge of building a car using ordinary, recycled materials to demonstrate what they've learned about Newton's Laws of Motion. Students explored how to decrease friction, how mass affects acceleration and inertia, and how the shape of an object can affect air resistance. Students competed to see whose car can travel the farthest distance.

WHAT'S ON THE MENU?

Some of our 6th grade students were able to chat with our lunch staff about lunch options and interests. On behalf of their peers, they were able to share some of their favorite items and what they hope to see on the menu for next year. While having this conversation, they learned a lot about the components of a nutritious meal and the lunch process!

CELEBRATING THE DIVERSITY OF OUR COMMUNITY!

On June 4th, the Diversity Club hosted its annual Diversity Festival. Between food, origami, henna, face painting, bracelet making, lawn games, raffle prizes, a cultural dance performance and an incredible DJ, there was something for everyone to enjoy. The Diversity Festival was a fantastic way for Kreps students, families, and staff to celebrate the end of the 2021-2022 school year!

THE SOUND OF MUSIC

6th Grade Band Students participated in their second and final concert of the year. As always, they made us proud with their cohesiveness and continued improvement as a group. We look forward to seeing what's in store for them next year!

END OF THE YEAR HISTORY BOWL!

To close out the year, students participated in a History Bowl where they had to study questions from a multitude of categories. After a fierce competition that included 19 teams, Ms. Widdoes' homeroom was crowned the winner! Congratulations to all of our participants and especially our winners!

PROJECT GREEN'S YES WE CAN GARDEN UPDATE!

The Yes, We Can! Garden is built and ready to be enjoyed! Thanks to a grant from EWEA, along with the hard work of several teachers, Project Green students, and families, we have an outdoor learning space that is ready to grow with our community. Students and their families are welcome to join the Kreps Summer Garden club, which will meet once a week over the summer. During our meeting times, we will look after the plants, snack on our harvests, play games, and simply enjoy being together as a community. A permission slip is required. Join the Google Classroom for more information. The Google Classroom code is jzo6d5j

STUDENTS OF THE MONTH!
