Cougar Connect (Boletín)
Week of October 12, 2020 (Semana del 12 de octubre de 2020)
Block Schedule (Horario de bloque)
The first week of the new block schedule seemed to bring a lot of relief to students, staff, and families, which was great to see and hear. There is no school on Monday this week, so don’t forget that Tuesday is a “B” day. Students will attend periods 1, 2, 4, and 6.
Some were still confused about PE for Thursday and Friday, so I want to clarify again, especially since we are still adjusting to the new schedule. For students who have Emig, Meek, or Reynoso, on Thursday or Friday they don’t have regular live PE during their PE period. (This is because these three teachers teach on Wednesdays. They have their planning day on Fridays, which means it is not equitable to provide live PE instruction to the Thursday students, but not the Friday ones).
To fulfill that PE requirement for Thursday or Friday they have two options: Submit a video of themself working out, along with a list of the exercise routine they completed, or attend a live session on Thursday at 2:10 pm. (The link is in their teacher’s Google Classroom). PE teachers will go over this again and the requirements will be clearly posted in Google Classroom.
Now that the school day ends earlier we have more time to provide small group support starting around 2:10 pm. During the planning time this past Tuesday, teachers met to figure out who needed more support and coordinated their efforts since some students need help in multiple subjects. We will be sending out emails and messages through Blackboard starting tomorrow, Monday, notifying you if your student has been assigned certain days/times for support and with which teachers. These students will be expected to attend weekly until they are passing their classes or don’t need the extra support. Students are also able to pop in and get help from teachers as well. For right now we will be using Google Meet (and the Google Meet nicknames) for the after school sessions to make it easier for students.
Student of the Month (Estudiante del mes)
Congratulations to the students below who were chosen by teachers as a September Student of the Month. (Each teacher may select one student from each period they teach). Students were selected for one the following categories: Academic Excellence, Outstanding Citizenship, or Respect & Responsibility. Students with a star by their name means they were selected by two different teachers. Unfortunately due to distance learning we won’t have a big group picture to share each month like we normally do. All students will still receive a certificate and treat.

Thank you to all who attended the Principal’s Coffee on Friday. I appreciate your patience with technology. (I lost my connection in the middle and then learned based on the settings I had in place for Zoom I couldn’t type in the chat while sharing my screen). If you weren’t able to attend, here is the link to the recording:

School Site Council (Consejo del sitio escolar)
Thank you to those who submitted paragraphs to be a part of Site Council this year. We haven’t been able to vote on representatives because I didn’t have the minimum five volunteers that we needed to have “an election.” Now I have the five we need so that we can get started with Site Council for this year. Others are welcome to attend our meetings, but won’t get an official vote when we have to vote on items. For federal monitoring purposes we must officially vote and be able to show that we had a ballot where people voted, so please take thirty seconds to click on this link and vote for your Site Council representatives. Below is a paragraph about each candidate so that you can learn a little bit more about them.
Anne Barnitt:
I'd like to participate in the School Site Council. My students are 8th graders Ellery and Tessa Barnitt. They attended Adelante Spanish Immersion school K-5, and have continued in the Spanish program at KMS. They've taken many incredible classes like music, robotics, the
core curriculum (in Spanish!), and sports, not to mention the outings and extra offerings like the musical. I have appreciated every single experience. I'd like to be part of the site council because Redwood City Schools and teachers have done so much for our kids, and I want
to contribute to their wellbeing and share in some of the work. I work as a registered nurse at a hospital in RWC, and this affords me knowledge of what is happening in regards to local public health, right now. I think this point of view is valuable as we navigate how to safely educate our students, support our educators and leadership, and maintain a sense of community in the setting of an ongoing pandemic.
Christine Castro:
My name is Chris Castro, and I am a candidate for the Kennedy School Site Council. I was a teacher in the Redwood City School District for 27 years at both Fair Oaks and Adelante Spanish Immersion Schools. I have served on Site Councils at both of these schools in a teacher role and for the past two years at Kennedy in a parent role. I have a son here at Kennedy in eighth grade. I would like the opportunity to bring the experience I have as both a parent and an educator to the School Site Council.
Debbie Moore:
Hi! My name is Debbie Moore. I am the mother of a current 6th grader here at KMS. I have been a member of the School Site Council for the last five years. I have served as Secretary and have been a voting member. I find it fascinating to learn about the statistics and budget of the school, help make emergency plans, and learn about the inner workings and plans for the school by the RCSD. I find it very fulfilling to collaborate on decisions with the Kennedy staff. My goal is to be a part of making Kennedy a true community school. Thanks for your consideration.
Emily Lowe:
My daughter, Charlotte, is a 7th grader this year and enjoys attending Kennedy. I am a credentialed teacher with more than 15 years of experience, half of those years spent teaching in Bay Area public middle schools. Currently, I teach part-time in a private multi-age classroom for elementary and middle school students with dyslexia. I was on the Adelante School Site Council for 4 years and am familiar with how SSC works behind the scenes to help a school meet state and district guidelines, while keeping the best interests of students and staff at the forefront. Thanks for your consideration!
Roy Dorling:
I currently have an 8th grader at Kennedy and a 10th grader at Sequoia High School. My children have attended Orion, Clifford and Kennedy Middle Schools. I have been active in each school, serving on the boards of each of these schools PTOs and School Site Councils. I am also on a non-profit board of a company that provides volunteer tutoring to children in San Carlos and Redwood City, including Kennedy MS. I have been on the Kennedy SSC for two years. I want to remain on the Kennedy SSC for one final year to provide feedback and support to the school administration as they continue to educate our kids.

Zoom
If you are having trouble getting onto a Zoom meeting I am re-emphasizing these steps I shared last week:
1) Login to Clever.
2) Click on “RCSD Zoom Login.”
3) Click “Sign In” and then when prompted, choose to sign in with Google.
4) Now go back to the Zoom link in your Google Classroom.
Note: After you finish one class you must logout of the Zoom link in order to be able to login to the next Zoom link.
If you are still having issues then call the office. If you can’t get through, then email administrators.
Students, if a teacher is out please make sure you read carefully in Google Classroom to know if there is a sub and if the sub will be using Zoom or Google Classroom. If a teacher is out and isn’t able to share their Zoom links ahead of time then Google Meet will be used instead.

WEDNESDAYS AT 11:00
WE WILL BE READING:
Chase's memory just went out the window.
Chase doesn't remember falling off the roof. He doesn't remember hitting his head. He doesn't, in fact, remember anything. He wakes up in a hospital room and suddenly has to learn his whole life all over again . . . starting with his own name.
He knows he's Chase. But who is Chase? When he gets back to school, he sees that different kids have very different reactions to his return.
Some kids treat him like a hero. Some kids are clearly afraid of him.
One girl in particular is so angry with him that she pours her frozen yogurt on his head the first chance she gets.
Pretty soon, it's not only a question of who Chase is--it's a question of who he was ... and who he's going to be.
Contact Ms. Cooper, ecooper@rcsdk8.net, if you are interested.

The USDA approved an extension to the free meal program through December 2020, which is great news. Here are some highlights.
Effective, 9/1/20, free meals are available to children 2-18 years old.
All families welcome, not restricted to RCSD, Connect, or KIPP students
No meal card is required
Students do not have to be present
Attached below are two fliers with all of the details about how and where you can get meals at RCSD locations. Starting on September 14, there are some new changes. Mondays families can pick up meals for students for Monday through Wednesday, and on Thursdays families can pick up meals for the rest of the week. Again, please read the fliers for more details. We know there are circumstances in which families cannot attend the designated pick up times, but we don’t want any student to go hungry and not have food because of this. Please call 650-423-2279 to request more information about meal delivery.

Shadowing at Sequoia HS in Fall 2020 (Visitar Sequoia HS en otoño de 2020)
Important Note: We are NOT planning on inviting 8th grade students into live Zoom classes. Our teachers are facing challenging enough circumstances already without the added logistics of welcoming visitors.
Currently 8th grade students and families can register via the SHADOW PAGE of the Sequoia HS website and THIS REGISTRATION FORM. The registration (as in years past) asks for shadow curricular and extracurricular interests. Based on this information, the shadow with one of our hosts. The host will then have a prescribed set of steps that they take
Email a general letter introducing themselves and "welcoming" the shadow
Providing three video links (Virtual Orientation, About Sequoia and the 2020 Virtual Lib Dub)
Providing electronic copies of resources (important list of contacts, campus map, social media accounts to follow, course preference form, other materials from the program planning handbook, etc)
Details about supplemental informational events (IB Info Night, Open House, 8th Grade Welcome Night, etc.)
As part of their registration, shadows/parents will also be asked for their preferred method of contact (phone call to student, phone call to parent, text message, zoom, FaceTime, etc.) Sequoia host students will reach out via the preferred medium, as well as provide contact information for any necessary follow up.
We will also provide
Student Panels - Subject-specific student panel sessions will be held weekly (Wednesday, 2:00 PM) and cover a range of topics.
Parent Informational Sessions - Modeled to mimic the in-person sessions we held each shadow day in years past. I'll host these sessions (45 minute target... stretch to 60 minutes if necessary). I'll be joined by 2-3 volunteers from the PTSA who can provide input from a parent perspective on the Sequoia experience. We will offer both morning and evening sessions.
Here is the link to all of the upcoming sessions.
