Burr and Burton Academy's Summertime Reading
BBA Summer Reading Assignments
Incoming Freshmen, AP students, Honors Model UN students, and Mountain Campus students have specific reading assignments which can be found here.
Students in Grades 10-12 not enrolled in an AP class or Honors Model UN should choose one of the books on this list to read. Each book is sponsored by one or more faculty members. When we return to school in the fall, faculty members will host book discussion groups with the students who have read their sponsored selection.
A limited number of the summer reading books will be available for circulation at the Manchester Community Library. All BBA students are eligible for a Manchester Community Library card. In some cases, there are downloadable audiobooks available. If students have any difficulties finding a copy of their book or need help accessing an audio version, they should email Mrs. Putney.
Ms. Silver is reading about animal behavior & intelligence
A surprising exploration into the wonder of consciousness. Sy Montgomery explores the emotional and physical world of the octopus' surprisingly complex, intelligent, and spirited creature: and the remarkable connections it makes with humans.
Mr. Nicholson's epic novel spans over 200 years
Jen Hyatt’s 5 star review, “The story follows the descendants of two half-sisters who live in Africa in the 1700's. One marries a white slaver; the other is sent to America on a slave boat---each set of two chapters is a peek at the lives of each ensuing generation. Moving, powerful.”
Mr. Graff is reading historical fiction
Inspired by the single greatest tragedy in maritime history, bestselling and award-winning author Ruta Sepetys (Between Shades of Gray) lifts the veil on a shockingly little-known casualty of World War II. An illuminating and life-affirming tale of heart and hope.
Ms. Kenny is reading realistic fiction
Fifteen-year-old Jake receives an email with a sexually explicit attachment from a girl and decides to forward it to a friend, unaware of the consequences that follow and how they will affect each person he loves.
Ms. Strain is reading this Mystery / Thriller
Twelve-year-old Kyle Westergaard is one of Grimstad's paperboys. Even though Kyle has been written off as the “slow” kid, he has dreams deeper than anyone can imagine – he wants to get out of town, take care of his alcoholic mother, and give them a better life. While delivering newspapers, he witnesses a car accident and now has money and a lot of white powder in his possession.
Ms. Hogan & Ms. Rose are reading this non-fiction
Through statistics, surveys, and the stories of hugely successful people who didn't attend the most exclusive schools, Bruni demonstrates that many kinds of colleges-large public universities, tiny hideaways in the hinterlands-serve as ideal springboards. And he illuminates how to make the most of them. What matters in the end are a student's efforts in and out of the classroom, not the gleam of his or her diploma.
