Welcome Back!
Happy New Year! I hope that you and your family enjoyed a wonderful break with time well spent together. I'm excited to have all of that energy back in the building, and if I'm being honest, to get out of the sickness that seems to be going around the area like crazy. As we come back into the new year, the end of first semester is quickly approaching. As students get ready to complete final exams (some for the first time), it is important that they take advantage of all of the resources we have available to help prepare. Our goal, as always, is 100% success in classes.

Cell Phones
Cell phones are an ever-increasing presence in all of our lives and what comes with that is the need for our students to learn how to prioritize and make choices for themselves that will support their goals and the environment they are in. We have seen very well-intentioned students who just can't seem to stop looking at their phones throughout the day. While this is something that most adults are also dealing with, the average number of notifications an adult receives far pales the number of notifications our students are receiving (upwards of 700 in a day in some cases). One of the solutions that we have put in place are our cell phone lockers for students who need the physical removal of the device so that they can focus. We have also encouraged our students to turn off their notifications during the day.
Psychology Students
I had the privilege of listening to our Intro to Psychology students give presentations on their ways to use principles of psychology to create solutions to some of the problems that teens are facing today. Students presented individually and in groups about issues ranging from appropriate sleep and learning styles to school start times and lighting in schools. Students provided interesting insight and thoughtful solutions even in the face of many questions from me and others on the panel. This is just one reminder of how impressive our students are when faced with a challenge.
SAT-PSAT
As many of you know, our 10th and 11th-grade students are working on SAT prep during their advisory. This follows a rotation style so that students are exposed to each portion of the test (Reading, Writing & Language, Statistics, and Math). Part of the challenge of these SAT style questions is not the skill component, but reading and deciphering the problem. It is one type of assessment that asks students to think at a more critical level than just solve a straightforward problem or answer a direct question about a reading passage. One of the best ways for students to practice is to have students continually practice these types of problems and a great resource for this is Khan Academy's SAT prep.
I've included a sample problem in the picture below. If you click on the picture, it will take you to the solution.
OLD NEWS - STILL IMPORTANT
Seniors Without Senior Seminar
We have a few seniors who don't have Senior Seminar and we don't want them to miss out on important information. If this is your child, please have them come to counseling during their lunch on Thursdays to find out any information they may have missed!
9th Grade Intervention
Did you know that we have intervention in all 4 core areas (math, science, social studies, and English) for our 9th-grade students? We are continuously looking at how our 9th-grade students are doing in these specific classes and have teachers who contact them to ensure that they know how to bring their grades up to successfully earn credit. Our 9th-grade intervention teachers can be contacted at the following email addresses if you have questions about how they might help during advisory:
English - Mrs. Boucher: bouchet@gibdist.net
Math - Mrs. Bailey: baileya@gibdist.net
Science - Mr. Jablonski: jablonm@gibdist.net
Social Studies - Mr. Mentzer: mentzem@gibdist.net
